I love Blazblue but I agree with this, excluding stages. The sprite artist over at french bread is fantastic, even if he's on a time crunch and has to lover the number of frames like with dengeki, they still look great. The new Melty will look excellent, if it ever comes out.

Xrd Sol still looks really retarded. Seeing them side-by-side it's as if they took his old sprite and stretched it to make it comically wide. I remember seeing an edit someone made with slimmer arms and legs and it looked pretty good.

They pose and shade every frame of the models' animations individually which is incredibly time consuming. It's comparable to sprites in that it's more trouble than it's worth to make alternative outfits, since they would have to go over and change ever character frame.

Don't listen to those other anons. Xrd's animation is based on bones and mesh swaps, which makes it eminently costume-friendly as long as you can create the several meshes needed per character. None of the animation or lighting data needs to change, and especially less so in Revelator where lighting has become stage-based. The reason it hasn't quite happened yet is purely one of production, ie for now they feel putting out new characters is more profitable. And even then that's not quite true given Elphelt's new costume. They're simply still testing the waters, with the steam version and all, and making incremental changes.

It's actually not massively more complex than the way 3d models are made in other games, it's just different. Like instead of making albedo and bump and illumination and scattering maps they're making diffuse, shadow multiply, shadow offsets and so on. The amount hasn't fundamentally changed, the shaders have. So the expensive part was R&D, figuring out what techniques ot use ot get the right look, and now they've got a working production pipeline.

Hell yeah. What's the mechanics I have to get used to this time around? I loved the fast past action of Blazblue and P4 Arena a lot. Is there something that makes GG:Xrd unique compared to these two games? And what is the parallel of Chie, Akihiko, Naoto, Yosuke, Bang, Taokaka, and Noel.

Xrd has more freedom with cancels. You can cancel startup and recovery of the move for example which leads to some pretty neat possibilities. It also has shorter combos compared to BB.

Not really. It's common problem of 2D->3D transition when some animations done in full frames while others like stance changing are still instant. It looks really bizzare. Xrd at least has consistent style and looks amazing.

I can agree on it looking consistent.

Still don't think it looks that good in motion though. It can't go for the sort of fluid animation present in actual 3D fighters like Soul Calibur because it woudn't work that well in the 2D fighter format, but what they've done doesn't look as good as modern 2D fighters like UNIEL or Skullgirls either. They've gone to massive efforts just to achieve this weird "worst of both worlds" inbetween.

That's the whole point. They constantly remind you models are actually 3D but looks 2D in gameplay. It was in the Xrd announcement trailer too and was quite damn impressive.
