Fun game, more fun with friends.
Balance seems pretty good for the most part, but everyone seems to have one or two heroes that they think is the most broken. For most people, it's Bastion, though just about any Offense hero can wreck his shit if they get around him.
For me, the broken hero is Roadhog. He one-shots squishier heroes, can take a ton of damage, and can heal himself for a ton of health fairly often. Only bad Roadhogs with no healer support seem to ever die. I'm sure other people would disagree and have some viable strategy for killing him.
The only major issue I see with the game is longevity. I just played for about 2 hours with some friends and had a great time, but will that continue for more than a couple weeks before someone gets distracted by some other game? I don't see any reason why not.

I played a game as Mercy when 3 of my team members were playing sniper characters. I was constantly flying back and forth, healing them to full and moving onto the next target. Mercy is more of a defensive hero, Lucio is always the one you want when you're on offense.

the thing that keeps me playing is that I feel like a bad ass playing it.

though it is the same mode over and over agin. hopefully they add more later. It needs it now though.
the 3 they have now (really 2) are way too similar.
It's honestly pretty damn balanced considering it's in beta or at best early release (if you assume no balance changes for release).
It's fun, the characters are all interesting, doesn't have the bullshit drops/weapons upgrades of TF2.

How seriously competitive is the nature of the game compared to tf2? I've watched some videos of the gameplay but there's so much shit flying around the screen that I have no idea what's going on. Way back when I played tf2 I enjoyed being able to pick any class I felt like usually and still contribute to the team. Is it basically encouraged not to stick with one class and change multiple times in a game if needed?

I don't think it is, it returns all projectiles. You actually have to deflect the arrows themselves before they turn into a the dragon. It's not that difficult to not launch your ult when your face to face with a fucking Genji, any Hanzo that this happens to deserves it.
This game is already boring.
The gunplay is so unbalanced that it has become "play passively until you can press Q to win" the game.
I'm actually surprised at how balanced it is considering the lineup. Everything seems to have a check and balance.
Does anyone know if these are the only game modes though? Seems like it will get boring after a while.

I would seriously argue that overwatch is far more punishing when it comes to teamwork than tf2 even though tf2 has the higher skill ceiling
Shallow bland game designed for casuals
Little to no feedback for hits, this is basic FPS design I have no idea how this got past early playtesting
Movement system is boring and slow, no matter who you are a huge amount of time is just spent slowly walking waiting for your movement ability to recharge or just slowly walking with no ability.
None of the movement abilities really build up any sort of momentum or anything, not fun at all.
Actual characters/classes sometimes literally just have one weapon and only like 2 or 3 usable abilities sometimes, is this a joke?
Weapons overall super floaty and don't' feel good to shoot at all
The whole game design is based on keeping casuals playing, which is why they have no real scoreboard because they don't want people to see how bad their doing. You see this reflected in the other parts of the design too.
The game lacks any complex systems that require learning and the only thing that requires learning is knowing good times to use your heros literal 1 or 2 abilities (real tough to figure out)
There is zero real depth and I have no idea how this is going to last, other then rabid blizzard fanboys I guess. The only people I can see who think this is good are people who don't really play shooters.
Try dirty bomb, planetside 2, tribes, or basically any other shooter that is actually made by experienced people for someone other then 12 year olds and people with the mind of 12 year olds.

If your pub actually has the common sense to counter pick(Only happened once and I'm level 30.) it's still fucking awful. It just becomes you and your team constantly switching to classes you don't want to play just to stop the enemy team from kicking your shit in.

I play Smite, and I make damn sure to try out a new God in practice mode to understand its abilities before I go out and play against real people.
With this game, I can play a completely new hero and know exactly what they do and how they can be used by the time I've walked from spawn to the first objective. There is so little game knowledge required to do well for this that there's nothing interesting going on.
