What does a "comfy" game mean to you?
>>
it means that I'm going to enjoy it
>>
>>336863185
nice OST, great art direction, fun exploration, and characters that actually feel believable
>>
>>336863185
minimal competition, stress, or feeling like I need to react in a timely manor combined with an immersive setting.
>>
It's fun to play in a way that isn't heart-pounding action or drama.

I can't get over how fucking comfy Grow Home is.
I wish I could delete all my memories from it and play it again. Too short.
>>
Games that don't stress me out and have a relaxing nature. Animal Crossing comes to mind. A lot of Nintendo games do.
>>
>>336863185
Nintendo
>>
Something that can kill time but also carry a little fun and challenge, something like this http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/553844
>>
stress-free
clear sense of progression but you set most/all of your own goals
ideally fall/winter setting
>>
>>336863543
Pretty much this except I don't care for characters that much.

Etrian Odyssey games are the perfect comfy games.
>>
>>336863778
This
But I hate the term comfy, sounds like a meme word when describing games.
>>
>>336864103
technically all words are memes

>>
>>336863724
He said comfy, not shit
>>
>>336864191
True. Too bad people forgot the original meaning of the word "meme" and now use it as a substitute for "image macro"
>>
>>336863185
I game I can play while being comfortable and is also relaxing.
>>
It could mean multiple things:
>something I can spend a lots of time without constantly feeling a need to hurry to do something, eg. city builders and slow-paced strategy games
>something that has a world that is fun to explore and get immersed in, eg. Elder Scrolls
>something that has a charming atmosphere eg. Fable 2, also somewhat overlaps with the previous point

But yeah, it's more like something that you just feel instead of being an objectively meterable thing.
>>
>>336863185

Creates a feeling of contentment.

This can be achieved through setting, characters, completion of objectives or the relative safety of a place.

I think the most potent thing is areas of the game that are contrasting. Like if the game is mostly wasteland or dangerous places where you have to watch your back constantly, if there is a place that is safe, you can interact with NPCs, pursue non-combat things, it is very comfy.

Such as The Bar compound in STALKER: Shadows of Chernobyl.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUCkdmHFO2c

It's a dump, but even though it's nowhere as nice as your farm in Harvest Moon or some village from a Miyazaki film it's comfy since the world outside the bar is pretty nasty.
>>
>>336863185
Not frustrating, has an inviting atmosphere, relatively easy difficulty, good music.

Oblivion is a great example and personal favorite for me as well as Titan Quest

>>something that has a world that is fun to explore and get immersed in, eg. Elder Scrolls

Only certain parts of Elder Scrolls are comfy. Such as the player homes or homesteads. But they are extra comfy because the screaming bears can't get your there, as well as because you can decorate them a little bit.
>>
>immersive
>minimal stress
>good art
>good music
>a game you know everything about

Something like Animal Crossing would be a good one. Something you'd play under the covers or with a hot cup of tea on a cold snowy day.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1DPNE9sOHQ
>>
>>336863185
A game where I get the most fullifilment without even trying.
>>
Something that is reminiscent of the feeling I get when it's raining/snowing/overcast out and I have a really hot cup of coffee after coming out of the shower.
It's really autistic and abstract I know, but that's the best way to describe it. Something I would play at my utmost peak of relaxation.

My earliest memory of a comfy vidya moment is playing a game I got on Christmas day.
>>
its a euphanism for "video game for NEETs"
>>

I hate that word. It's the battlecry of a generation who is exhausted from doing nothing. People with low frustration tolerance and low problem solving skills.

For me, comfy is the ability to sit back every now and watch things happening in the game without much of my input or any pressure placed upon me.

It needs a good art style and theme to shine and I mostly find it in immersive RPGs or Strategy games with an emphasis on building or trading.
>>

>>
>>336863801
Seasons/seasonal areas and dynamic weather are always fucking great, but so few games seem to bother. I just want my game to track my location over wifi and adjust the in-game weather to match the weather in real life. If it's raining, I want it to rain in my game. If it's fall, I want the leaves on the trees to change color. This shouldn't be so hard.
>>
>>336863543
Almost exactly this

>>336863936

comfy for this anon - both familiar gameplay and enjoyable gameplay. preferably a game I can thrive in-game without too much effort.
>>
To me, a comfy game is something where I can lay back, get immersed into the world, and just have a good time without too much stress.
That doesn't necessarily mean an easy game, but it having a good soundtrack, good characters, and a plot that I can give a shit about is an absolute must. Also, if I can play it under a blanket, which reminds me of when I was a kid, it'll enhance the comfy by at least 100%. Pic related, and also Persona 4.

It's a good mod for small scale stuff too. Placing crates, fences and animals can make even production areas look nice and unique.
>>
A comfy game, for me, is one that has periods with no time pressure that let me just relax and get immersed in the atmosphere of a place.
It isn't necessarily a game with little challenge as long as there is time to stop and smell the digital roses between the high-intensity portions.

Not particularly intense for most of its duration. Comfortable to play, relaxing over periods of time. Typically has a setting that feels "charming" or "homely" with warm surfaces.

So basically casual games.

EVE online is the comfiest game of all time
>>
>>336866505
You can still say you like it "ironical".
>>
>>336863185
Through playing it, I become familiar with the feeling of the action. Enough that it just kind of clicks, and I'm in sync. Playing the game no longer feels like I'm struggling for control. But rather, I'm completely comfortable performing anything the game asks of me. To the point where it becomes second nature. I no longer have to think about what I'm doing. I'm just doing it.

Everything everyone is saying about "atmosphere" and "immersion", is all bullshit. It comes to how in sync you are with the action.

>>
>>336863185
It means something that's casual for the most part, not casual in terms of like fighting games, but just taking it back, and relaxing while you play it. It has music that is just really good, the art direction is nice to look at, and just aesthetically pleasing. Something that can cheer you up if you're feeling down.

a quiet/subtle atmosphere.
Believable world design, cities/towns/villages that look like they're actually lived in.
passive/uninvasive, calming music
relatively open world without many time/progression restraints and multiple ways to go through the game without being forced down one path.

another important thing is to feel an emotional connection to the locations within the game your playing.

>>
ITT people dance around the fact that comfy is a code word for casual
>>
>>336867736
There's nothing wrong with casual games.
>>
>>336863185
It has to engage me enough to stay interested. Too easy with nothing to explore and I get bored.

Gentle music I could easily fall asleep to even at a decent volume. If goddamn metal blasts during combat, it fails.

Setting or style has to be serene. This can be in darker games too (all 3 Deus Ex games do it for me) but I should never feel overly rushed.

And finally it has to know how to let me just play. Tutorials are fine but keep it short and only at the beginning. No characters telling me to go do stuff if I take my time. If I want to try jumping on this rock for an hour just let me without reminders to get going.

Oh and it needs to give me decent freedom to do what I want. Not open world necessarily, just make sure I always feel like going off the path is worth it in some way.
>>
>>336863185

A difficulty level that's not too hard but not too easy.

Some tedious parts that cause me to zone out and forget I exist, but not so much tedium that it becomes really annoying

A sense of coziness and safety in some parts

An area to explore and see the sights (or imagine the sights, if the game has primitive graphics or is text-based).
>>
>>336868805

Some good examples btw would be

1. Mother series

2. Contact

3. Etrian Odyssey series

4. Zelda series

5. Most text adventures along the lines of Zork!

6. Super Mario RPG

7. Super Mario World series

8. Donkey Kong Country series

Those are all examples of comfy games.

Some games that would not be really "comfy" but are still good would be games that include lots of action, no sense of safety, lots of loud noises, stuff like that.

Those games could still be great, but they wouldn't exactly be comfy.
