Diversity is like painting a picture.
You got your prussian blue skies, you've got some sap green for your grass, and the trees are vandyke brown. When well used you get some amazing paintings, the colours flow together naturally and nothing looks out of place. Each colour has it's purpose and position in the painting.
But what most people think is "diversity" is taking this great painting, and slapping hot pink all over it because hot pink isn't represented enough in paintings. Doing this doesn't make the picture better (and almost always ruins it), it stands out and is done without any kind of thought at all outside of "we need more hot pink".
