We can fling benchmarks at each other all day. There's hundreds of them and there's no clear consensus on which card performs better. I assume many if not most people, at least on leddit, /v/ and /g/, overclock their 970s. 970s and Maxwell in general overclock much better than AMD equivalents. You can easily surpass a stock 980 in performance just by bumping the clocks with no need for voltage adjustment. AMD has more VRAM and it's cheaper, but that's about it. nvidia asian jew ceo claimed in normal gaming the 1080 will be 20 - 30% faster than the 980 ti. in certain vr situations utilizing pascal new vr features that are only available in nvidia's vrworks gimpworks platform it can be up to 2x faster.
so 20 - 30% must mean the high 30% in memory starved situations. think triple 1440p and 4k+.
not surprising since the 1080 comes with faster gddr5x (7gbps vs 10gbps) and a bump from 6gb to 8gb. these claims are also compared to a stock, reference 980 ti with a high boosting 1080 founders edition.
so in reality with most 980 ti on the market being factory overclocked, third party modifications, the difference could be 10 - 20%. my 980 ti comes overclocked 12% faster than stock for example.
1070 will most likely come out as fast and slightly faster in scenarios that are memory starved, like triple 1440p or 4k due to the use of faster ram.
ultimately all this means is that the titan x was absolute waste of an investment and lost near 90% of its value and the 980 ti lost 55%+ of its value.

So the 1080 is 75% faster than the 980 at Tomb raider. But there is absolutely no word about how the test was conducted. Maybe they used 4k resolution in wich case the 980 will obviously start crapping itself due to 4gb of memory vs 8gb DDR5X. Also the 1080 uses a much higher clock where none knows whether the card can support it for a long time without the need to throttle.
Also 75% lead means about 35fps@4k which is still hardly playable and even disastrous if you think about VR.
Nvidia didn't show any absolute fps numbers and there was no word about async compute as well (probably means gimped dx12). Almost all the advancements where in the clock and memory department which can mostly be traced back to the 16nm shrink and DDR5X. Therefore you should probably refrain from judging the architecture until we can see any actual performance numbers.
If the advancements solely come from the aforementioned factors. Then the architecture is AMD's opportunity to beat them since they will have the same advancements due to the shrink.

At launch yes, but there have been weekly updates to the spec to iron out issues and a number of driver updates. This is why Valve has been pushing Linux if they can get devs on Linux/Vulkan it will benefit everyone with higher performance.

The new Unreal Tournament, Kerbal Space Program, and Civ V. Those are what eat up all my time gaming these days and none of them are console ports or would even be likely to be approved on a console.
Sure KSP for consoles is happening now, but only after it proved to be a huge success on more open platforms. If they had gone to Sony years ago and said "We want to make a game about launching rockets like that one episode of Top Gear" it never would have been approved.

yeah you'll be fine with that. people seem to thing you HAVE to upgrade to the latest and best cards to run games when in reality a 2 or 3 year old card will run 95% of games just fine at high settings (high being less than ultra/maxed out). very few games will use more than 4gb at 1080p anyway. hell, there are still people who are using older 2gb and 3gb cards that don't have any vram problems at 1080p.
