the thing is, just like most bosses, his moveset completely depends on your position, like if you stand close to his side or rear, he will use kicks and shoulder tackles a lot, if you stand right in his face he will try to grab, if you stand far away he will either jump or use that charge in his second form
but if you stand just at the ideal reach distance of his halberd in front of him, almost all of his attacks will be halberd attacks that you can easily parry

I think there's just something in general about the models and their skeleton that don't mesh well. When you wear thick armor your animations don't really reflect that. Dark Souls 2 did that much better

I'm baffled people struggle with her. If you roll right at her and be aggressive she over swings almost every attack. If you sit back and let her wind up on your fat ass you're gonna pay for it. Two hand your weapon and only switch to shield if you need some breathing room to fend off and attack or two to get away and heal. Not him, but I've put about 70-80 hours into each of the games and went back to play DS1 before 3 came out, and the only boss that you really need to pay any manner of attention to is O&S, maybe 4 kings if they spam you with the tracking bolt. Compare bosses towards the end of the game like Nito and Seath to the likes of the Boner Brothers and Nameless and it's pretty easy to see. The same with generic enemies, fighting the DS3 Silver Knights in Anal Rodeo just serves to remind how slow and non-threatening the old enemies were compared to enemies like the Lothric Knights, and that was with their attack sets improved. Circle strafing and backstabbing was a legit strategy in the first game, DS3 at least makes you work for it a bit by making you roll through attacks and deal with much more aggressive enemies.
I really wish there was a boss rush mode so we could replay cool fights without having to enter NG

The bosses in DaS3 are quality.
The Deacons are a way better version of the Congregation. Abyss Watchers fight was neat. Wolnir was very good too, though a bit easy. Pontiff was great, Champ, Oceiros and Armour, too. The Princes were diamond boner material and the Nameless King / Cinder were great too.

Champ is only hard if you're right up in his face, like you've been trained to do against most souls bosses.
If you hang back he'll mostly do his jump-in or Champ's charge. Both are easy to dodge and punish. The jump in is also one of the easiest things to parry in the game.

I mean seriously, Champ is EASY to parry. the parry window is enormous if you just use a small shield. I usually do the same but I only flubbed like two parries before i killed him. He was honestly easier the Iudex Gundyr just because of how easy he is to parry.

Small and medium shields have a delay but are decent enough to block with so they're for set-up parries.
Specialized parry shields like the buckler, target, orcaestushave near instant start ups, with them you can parry on reaction.

The chest will stretch out the armor and hopefully lower the head. The black skin will hide the missing armor plates on the arms and legs.

All enemy attacks will stagger you regardless of armour, so learning attack timings is very important, to the point that for a new to souls player, the game is very much trial and error, regardless of how frothy that phrase makes peoples mouths.
Try as many different weapons as possible, the straight sword and rapier weapon types will likely seem the most effective, but they don't necessarily make things fun

Can someone explain this to me? You fight him at the end of the game, meaning you likely already fought aggressive bosses like Pontiff and Gundyr. You should have figured out some way to avoid incoming damage and get hits in on enemies that attack often. So where does the difficulty come in on NK? He's slower than both of them, can be staggered, and shouldn't be one shotting anyone. I genuinely don't see how he's #1 by any stretch of the imagination.

All of DaS3's "humanoid" fights were quite unique though. The entire problem with DaS2 is that you had a huge amount of humanoid fights with painfully similar patterns.

Also, it should be noted that while people like to call this series of games "punishing", you will have to make your own challenges, which in my opinion is one of the main appeals of the games, this one especially.
If you just want to experience the story with as straightforward and relaxing an experience as possible, you only need to pick up a broadsword from the first area, keep it upgraded and keep 2-3 phantoms with you at all times for the least amount of hassle and you'll still have the full game experience.
I'm currently working on a "drunken master" play through, only using the basic fist weapons and only playing once every few weeks when completely wasted. You've got to make your own challenge runs to keep the game fresh

Most probably because of the poor lockon during the fight.You have to track 2 foes instead of just the one. Also in the 2nd phase his timing with the exaggerated attacks leads to most people rolling either too soon or too late which usually means guaranteed death.
The first phase was easy once I got a hold of it but the 2nd pulled quite a few of those 1 hitko bullshit.
