maps aren't long slogfests like the early console games yet they also aren't perfectly flat empty rooms with chokepoints and still have gimmicks unlike the later ones
fire emblem was still a western fantasy inspired game in the vein of loddoss or something instead of being full of retarded characters with personalities and clothes that only make sense in one of those crappy dime a dozen mmo anime series they make these days
all three games are distinct enough to have their own appeals, with FE6's difficulty, FE7's replay value and FE8's freedom to pick fights and power up characters without going so overboard like in later games that the game is no longer a strategy game but a grinding game

They'll be slow as fuck and possibly have major sound issues, but since it's not a very action-oriented game a low FPS shouldn't get in your way. You could always just play them on a PC or a Wii with a standard emulator anyway, playing SNES games on a CRT improves the atmosphere anyway (and the spritework is nowhere near as good as the GBA games).

Does anyone have experience making hacks?
I'd like to hack Sacred Stones to make a custom campaign. The Vampire Counts, reason I want SS is it already has monster sprites and I'm not confident in my sprite making skills.
What kind of difficulty do people generally like in these hacks though? I'd like to lean mine towards the more difficult side. Normal and Hard mode would be the only difficulty modes and Hard would have additional enemies and +2 stats in the early game and +4-5 in the late game.

I'm not a huge fan of reinforcements generally.
The only time I'm planning on adding enemy reinforcements are in Escape and Defend maps.
The way I've set it up most units should cap relevant stats but enemies generally keep pace. On Normal as long as RNG didn't fuck you and you use the weapon triangle you should be able to double one hit kill most enemies. And if RNG does fuck you I plan on having 2 of each stat booster to be found/dropped and 1 of each can be bought at a shop late game.
Not many units will have resistance, so magic users are very dangerous.
On Hard most enemies would be capped as well by end game, but I did add in some fairly powerful weapons. The main gimmick of the hack would be that Silver Weapons are weaker than Iron, but are Supereffective versus Undead and Vampires so they do 3x Might, +30% Hit and 3x Crit.

And they join you way too early, they get basically no experience from killing anything but bosses or other Laguz, which give like twice the experience to your other units anyways. I mean you can totally bench them and then bring them out again at Chapter 20 and they're still usable. Mordecai is the weakest because of his shit speed and speed growth along with his meh defense, but even he's viable for end game although hardly ideal.
RD fixed a lot of the problem with Laguz by letting you choose when they transform.

I would say each one, seeing as Sacred Stones didn't and technically PoR/RD don't seeing as Ashnard was the main antagonist of PoR and Dheginsea/Deghinsea wasn't the main antaongist in RD, Ashera and Lehran were. Well FE7 was a prequel to 6 so if you want to know how everything turned out and what happened to some of the characters, some of them don't get mentioned in 6 at all due to the nature of 7 coming after 6 and introducing characters, go to 6. But if you want a fresh setting, do the Radiant Games. Awakening was alright, Fates improves on it, but if you plan on playing all 3 routes, I'd go Hoshido - Nohr - Revelation. You may get bored if you go to Birthright/Hoshido after Conquest/Nohr and then Revelation is like the "true" route.

Fates nailed the gameplay and has an incredible soundtrack. It's a shame the plot is dogshit and the supports are subpar to disgusting. This thing about pairing anyone with everyone is stupid, I'd rather have a small amount of good quality supports than huge shitpile of them. There's something wrong when retainers can't support with each other. Also, GBA game swere great, but even though Sacred Stones is easy as shit, it's definitely the best of the three. I think people place too much importance in the story of Fire Emblem, as long as the story sets the gameplay up for interesting scenarios and battles the story shouldn't matter.
No good fantasty story 20-30 battles in it to begin with but this is something that Fire Emblem must have. As you'll play more of the games you'll see all of the conflicts are pretty contrived and the number of battles and victories makes every main character pretty much an unavoidable Mary Sue.
