FF1: A group of adventurers restore the power of four elemental orbs which calms and heals a once chaotic and dying world, and close an infinite time loop.

FF2: Survivors of an Imperial attack join a resistance movement and eventually kill the Emperor. Not accepting defeat, the dead Emperor wages war on Hell and returns to the mortal coil as the King of Darkness.

FF3: A group of youths chosen by crystals must work with a paralell dimension to balance the forces of Light and Dark before both are destroyed.

FF4: A conflicted knight and his entourage uncover a conspiracy to steal the world's crystals and discover an ancient civilization on the moon.

FF5: A world is temporally split to seal an ancient evil who plans to reduce everything to non-existence, a group of adventurers untangle the dimensions and restore the world to it's true form.

FF6: A meglomaniacal psychopath throws the balance of magic out of place, scars the planet, and forces a resistance group to destroy the source of all magic.

FF7: An eco-terrorist group tracks the spectre of a former elite soldier who is under the influence of an ancient space alien that intends to absorb the 'blood' of the
planet by summoning a giant meteor to threaten it.

FF8: A powerful sorceress attempts to cheat fate by compressing time into one moment using the unique abilities of a girl who can project people into the past,
and is subsequently killed by a group of child soldiers who only became soldiers because of her actions.

FF9: A spirit tree created to process alien souls is implanted to prevent rebirth of a planet's souls. A pair of grim reapers from outer space are the custodians, but one of the reapers doesn't know it, everyone has an existential crisis.

FF10: A dream manifests as a blond fuccboi and ecourages a spiritual mortician to end a cycle of perpetual violence on the world.

They are very complex and intricate for a videogame series. It's difficult to produce engaging narratives in such a format. They can't be as short as a movie, nor as long as many novels.

I haven't played many games that are as deep as many books I have read, but being deep isn't itself a good thing either. FFVII was definitely impressive for its time, whatever the case.

>>
>>336654587
Fuck this. Fuck this man. It's time to make the case for Tidus. Hear me out you fucks.

Tidus is geniunely a great guy. He gets a lot of shit because of his design but his personality is actually great. The guy suffered as a kid. He was abducted from his home where he was a famous Blitzball player only to end up in some shitty world with racist Blitzball players. What does Tidus do with the situation? Does he bend and give up? Does he moan and cry? No. Tidus becomes a fucking role model for the rest of the party. The guy has clearly suffered but he's not going to let that bring down other people. His sense of optimism and unity is what brings the party together and makes them defeat Sin. He also scores some virgin Summoner booty and does so by being his natural charming self. Tidus is a great guy.

>It was refreshing to not have a brooding MC
Fucking this. There are certainly things that warrant poking fun at in the game, but I've always felt that FFX had some of the best characters of the mainline series, and I think it was because of something as simple as typcial personality types being role-swapped -- the peppy goofball went from sidekick to protagonist, while the grim ex-militant became a mentor/caretaker. The brooding asshole was a hot chick. The love interest was a lot less spunky and independent.
And then there was Wakka. Good ole' racist, tactless, backwoods, bible-thumping Wakka.
It might've been that some of these personality-role combinations were present in previous games (I've never played 5, 6, or 8), but from my memory the longer list of titles had casts that tended towards much less variety in this regard.

Figuring out the interface is like ramming your face into brick wall, the difficult curve right at the start is a vertical spike, and once you get past that the extremely unbalanced classes can make the game borderline unwinnable or a total cakewalk.

>>336657886
Yes but it was mentioned complex stories tend to have depth, but that's just not so. You'd agree that even though it's merely a game story it certainly deserves to compete with Hollywood, which is old and about to go extinct.

Your metric of quality can be whatever you like, but I figure you deserve better than false depth.
>>

Kefka is the Cloud of Darkness of FF6. He just has a longer screen time.
>>
>>336657850
>He actually did love Ovelia, but she was paranoid that she was next to die. She had every reason to believe so
This is my favorite part of FFT's ending. It's pretty sad, but Delita completely deserved it. The fucker turned into the very thing he had hated so much, and lost sight of how it affected those close to him -- the very way it would have, and did affect him in his youth.
Oh yeah, and did Olan ever actually see Ramza's sister outside of the ending? I'd like to believe they survived, but I've always assumed Olan was just imagining things somehow.
>>
>>336658072
Of course it is so. Complex stories tend to have more depth than those that do not. That is usually why they end up complex. I did not say that it deserves to compete with Hollywood, in fact I said that they can't be compared for obvious reasons. Comparing a videogame plot to a movie plot is like comparing a novel to a movie. They are different mediums, with different forms of expression. They can't be held to the same metric.

hey that looks fun, here's my predictions for future ff titles:

FF16: The king of fire destroys the realm of ice, the king of ice has an affair with the queen of earth, the king of earth commits suicide, the queen of wind profits from the war and instability, and the child of light who is destined to balance the elemental forces is killed half way through the game, leaving his bodyguards to clean up the mess and wonder if they were any better off than when they started.

FF17: An invincible geomancer brutally assassinates certain individuals with a connection to the four elements, so that he may realign them for the purposes of killing himself, but a party of his victim's children turn the tables and cause him to be reborn as a moogle.

FF18: A group of retired soldiers are hired by a master clockmaker named Garland to seal a multidimensional rift created by one of his grandfather clocks, but one of the dimensions becomes more stable than their reality, setting the plot for FF1.

FF19: There's a giant brain inside the planet that forces unwitting groups of humans and monsters against each other for its own amusement.

FF20: A warrior from the past murders people from the future to prevent any of them from traveling back and undoing a bargain made by their ancestors to postpone all of winter until the end of time.

FF21: A sentient program halts a group of young idealists from freeing humanity from their dreamlike prison, as the people "stuck" inside are there on their own free will, because it's the only means of trapping three colossal espers that would otherwise eat all of humanity.

She's kinda cute, she really is a tragic figure along with Caius. But XIII-2 is more enjoyable with the pet system and slightly tweaked battle system. The story is pants on head retarded but I love it, then again all time travel stories are.

Under the advice of a fortune teller he moved the Squaresoft office away from Tokyo, to a place that made it impossible for I think either Amano or Uematsu to commute; the reason he quit and became a contractor (they both did this which is why I can't remember which the story pertains to).

Squaresoft, and indeed everything it produced prior to the merger, was the bizarre result of vector addition; the retardation of each creative force added together and cancelled eachother out. As staff left the company this equilibrium shifted back into the retard danger zone.
Here's a simplified diagram.

and so forth...

I'll add my 2 cents and say that Final Fantasy, like a lot of JRPGs and hell, Japanese games/culture in general is highly symbolic and/or implied. They broach broad, philosophical topics but then don't particularly delve into the specifics or even fully resolve plot arcs a lot of the time. If you read in between the lines and filter out all the more absurd elements there's some good stuff, but at times you have to look so deeply that it becomes debatable whether the meaning found was specifically intended by the developer or just blends with all the other broad brushstrokes. In other words, a lot of the meaning of FF games comes from the player himself; it's more of a tool or a supplement than a full-on guide or manual.
>>
>>336666949
He did expect it to a certain extent. Their access to instant special snowflake nukes was one of the reasons why Dalmasca and Nabradia got invaded.
>>
>>336663459
It wasn't even that. If it was that, it'd still be awkward, verging on cringeworthy which is why there are still people who think that even with "context"

Tidus literally comes from a world where he would never have had to fake a laugh, or act like everything's alright, because he not only "lived" in an era vastly more opulent and pampered than the standard of living in Spira, he was the fucking son of a famous athlete, set for life, living on his own, and the equivalent of a child star himself. It makes sense that it sounded stilted and awkward EVEN FOR A FAKE LAUGH, BECAUSE HE'S NEVER HAD TO DO ANYTHING LIKE THAT BEFORE and hell, he probably even thinks the very notion is kinda ridiculous.

The whole point of Tidus as a character was to provide a contrast to the joyless, duty-bound world of Spira; to prove that indulging every one in a while, even sometimes to excess isn't intrinsically destructive, nor is constant self-sacrifice and penance categorically moral or correct.
>>
I can't stand Tidus and (You)na. It's a shame such a decent battle system along with Auron and Lulu were wasted on such a shit game.
>>
>>336658991

Tidus and Zidane were just shit characters.

>>
>>336655559
It's "tied-us" as in the ocean's tides. Since FF6 (save for 9, as for that game they wanted a return to the old days of FF, and 12, as the goal for that game was to break the traditional FF mold) they've had a tradition of naming the protagonist after a natural phenomenon. Terra, Cloud, Squall (a storm), Tidus (the tide), Lightning. Now it looks like they're bucking this trend again for FF15, with didn't surprise me as they're trying out a new direction for the series.

What's with the hate for DQ? I personally like the series more than FF, but that doesn't mean that I think FF is trash and DQ has no faults. I would like to see DQ with a more complex, but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy the relatively simple plots of the DQ games so far. One thing that I find a lot in the series is that each town seems to have it's own story to it and doesn't involve games overall plot to much. Each town has a problem and you are there to solve it in someway. These towns become very independent and separated from each other because of this. This also makes them feel much more unique to me, but it also makes me feel like an errand boy at times. I go to a new town and I feel like I have to find the problem and just fix it. This works in some of the games like DQ3 (you feel like you are exploring the world and going on a grand adventure while gradually finding clues on the big bad of the game) while in others like DQ9 it just feels like a chore. Anyways I wish DQ can keep it's gameplay and take a little from FF's story telling. Just a little though.

>>336669949

Ff13 had some amazing battle music.
>>
>>336674891
For FF4 I simply dislike everything about it. The music is annoying, I don't care about the characters, the plot is boring, the gameplay is meh at best.
For FF6 I really don't exactly hate, I just find the story to be bad. I felt literally nothing when I fought against Kefka in the final battle, he was a generic doomsday villain and I couldn't give a crap about killing him. The Warring Triad was a disappointment, I expected more of them in the story. Terra's story was also annoying, I couldn't care less about her and her questions about love. Some characters never really got proper development and went nowhere or their development was rushed as fuck. Gau met his father once and that was it. Shadow was Relm's father...okay, whatever. Setzer, Mog...so many characters, so little to do with them. I only remember Cyan, Locke, Celes and the Figaro brothers getting a somewhat average development, but even their development wasn't that big nor great. Also, the Espers were some boring shit. The greatest part of FF6 is the music. Also, Zozo was a funny dungeon disguised as a city.
