Truth is. E3 has been kind messed up since its very conception.
Initially the electronic entertainment expo wasn't even just about games, but all things electronic entertainment. But it was also an expo for the investors, not the people. And it ran into problems from the very beginning since the expo wasn't that big of a hit with the investors.
But remarkably, since it was seemingly open to the public to just walk in and out due to the lack of restrictions, the expo became a hit among the people passing by.
Noticing this reaction, investors instead restructured E3 as an expo solely about games. But this time thinking how much they could win in terms of marketing purposes and not just the investors. So now E3 was about games, and they tried to push it regularly for that purpose.
But then you just need to read the story in this little picture here, and you'll see how E3 was closed off and made restricted and how they tried to reinvigorate E3 but this time with a tight leash for it to not miss its intended purposes anymore. And that's how the people lost E3. And that's how E3 took a steep dive down and has continued to dive since.
E3 is but a shell of its former self and it was always built on shaky foundations. And if sponsors pull out now it may disappear completely.
