I don't really think the gameplay is that weak. The time management aspect is neat since it puts a sort of pressure on every dungeon run. The combat itself isn't even that different from mainline SMT as well, though I did prefer P3s no ally control, I liked the sense of isolation it gave you.
In terms of characters, you're not discussing anything about them except their appearance of "waifu status". You're doing the same with the older characters so it's not just that you have a lack of info on p5.
