Is this the only game series consistently good close to perfection ?

But that's okay

but I don't like the uncharted games, why should I care about the metascore?
>>
Why does this game get near perfect scores?
It's gameplay mechanics are over a decade old. Third-person cover shooters have been done to death and done better years ago.
Hell, the gameplay mechanics are hardly even there since you watch more than play.

I played the first Uncharted around the time it came out. I found SOME enjoyment out of it, but I still had to force myself to finish the game just to feel like I saw it.

Something good isn't always new idea, the execution is the key.
Personally I like the first game. Likeable character, semi interesting story, fun multiplayer etc. But at that time I have no idea it will turn in to such big deal of title.

the series peaked with 2 desu

Because "gamers" love movies, I didn't expect U4 to have less than a 95. You don't need good gameplay when you have graphix & story. Uncharted games are also not bad, just kinda bland. I guess it's not for everybody.

>>336545212
nah. if every reviewer went back and played uncharted 1, it'd probably only get 70. because it's not that good.
i wouldn't call the rest of them near perfect either, especially as games.
as games they are lacking. they're well-directed and well-paced as experiences. the game design is made as a simple, smooth vehicle for the rest of naughty dog's "thrilling content". and that's what they're good at doing, maintaining the thrilling illusion of their adventure. however, it's a shallow illusion, though opaque, and within the realms of its interactivity and its structure, it's not very adventurous at all, you know? it's a series of very simple, discrete gameplay sequences with very polished content. too simple and too discrete to compare with some masterpieces of game design.
they're good, but i would say they're the best in their category of games, not just in general.

Biggest advertisment to this date for a Uncharted game

Ads on every bigger website in other words paying gaming websites to put ads for a game they are oing to review

Sony has the biggest fanbase and sites cannot allow to shit on the game because otherwise people are going to turn their back on them.

Also fan service deluce same as Souls series: Dark Souls 2 got better rewviews than Demon's and Dark Souls because the game went mainstream and a shitton of critics wanted to show how good they are

>>

>get dropped into an on-rails shooting gallery where you just press a button to cling to a piece of cover and shoot enemies as they pop up
You have the option to go with this playstyle but you've probably not noticed that nearly every combat area is designed for climbing, flanking, creating makeshift cover, meleeing and stealthing. Play like it's Time Crisis like a scrub and you're going to bore yourself to death.

Uncharted is full of arena shootout segments, in which the level design is actually fairly good, where you've got to do a lot more than just sit behind cover. Also, enemies do use tactics and flank you. And the climbing isn't just pressing a button to trigger contextual animations. It's a simple aim-to-reach and then jump system. It's still a simple TPS nonetheless. Just not as braindead as you make it seem.

Ok, let's defend Uncharted.

>HUURRR MOVIE
No, it's not. It's cinematic, but it does things right by always being in control. Take a wild car chase - you can move around and shoot just like you would in other scenes. A building is collapsing? Not a cutscene or whatever, you are still in control and fighting while the building is collapsing. It takes cinematic moments around you and instead of changing controls, adding QTE or having a cutscene, it lets you play it. And that's great.

>b-but it's just a generic third person shooter!
False. It was always well designed, you never just sat in a cover somewhere and shot boring enemies. The level design creates arenas for you to fight in, and you had to use your agility and platforming in fights as well, as enemies rush from all positions (behind, flank, front) and you must always move around, change positions, run away from grenades. In later games they also add people with armour and shotgun rushing at you, and now they added optional stealth, grappling hook and even bigger areas to explore.

>LOL QTE AMIRITE
There are very few QTE. Maybe the tutorial, and the fighting has a button prompt you need to mash to get out of grab, but that's it.

>muh deep story
It's a well written story. Nothing amazing, but above typical video game things, without being pretentious or anything. It's just a fun Indiana Jones type of thing.
>>
>>336549525
No, but it's jarring when enemies can take multiple assault rifle wounds to the chest and live.

Making a "near perfect" (in journalists' opinions) popcorn movie shooter is much easier than making a competent RPG, an amazing RTS or whatever else. It's the reason why Bethesda's games get some much praise from the press, because they blow their load right at the beginning leaving a great impression on most people. The dragon chase scene and then killing it near the tower, the breathtaking views of snowy mountains, the power armor in Concord and killing a deathclaw in the first hour of the game. Both were vulgar as fuck in my opinion, but most people liked it.

I know /v/ hates cinematic games because it's a meme to hate cinematic games and Uncharted is at the forefront of that genre, but the actual cutscenes have always been pretty quick and concise; they don't interrupt the gameplay with the frequency of something like Max Payne 3's cutscenes or drone on even close to as long as any given MGS title. The series' gameplay, while mechanically simplistic, has always comprised the bulk of the game length.
>>
>>336549982
I just said that you are in total control of most of them.

Let's take the car scene - in most games you would just be in place, maybe be allowed to jump at the right moment and shoot, perhaps.

In Uncharted you can freely run around, jump from truck to truck and shoot as you would fight and platform in other sections.

And this goes for all the cinematic set pieces, maybe there is one that is more limited. The collapsed train, flying out of an airplane, riding horses, collapsing building/helicopter chase, etc. running away from a truck in a tight alley... it's all you.
>>
>>336550025
People don't shit on cinematic games because they're cinematic. It's becaues they usually have hilariously simple gameplay mechanics or are just too easy. Same with every asscreed and the new batman, there is literally almost 0 depth to the game and you can master it within minutes. Anyone who isn't a complete shitter is usually bored with the game within the first few hours. I guarantee you if the DaS series had cinematic cutscenes but still retained its gameplay elements, /v/ would still love it.

>>
>>336550458
You either didn't play for more than an hour or you didn't play it at all.

They quickly introduce characters that are heavy armoured and you have to run from them. They often shover you with grenades and you have to run and change cover. You are usually, even in the second level, in an arena and you have to jump around.

Later stages have Yeti monsters that jump around and wreck you if you are not moving.

It's not stubbornness; it's a bad investment for me. There are only (maybe) 2 games on PS4 I'm interested in right now: Bloodborne and maybe Uncharted. Considering the fact that I will probably only put 60 hours into Bloodborne like I do with all the Souls games, and probably 40 or less for any Uncharted game, it makes no sense for me to go spend $400 for 2 games.

If there were, say, 10 or 12 games on PS4 that I really wanted to play I would go and buy one later today.

I just don't see what the problem is. It's not like a CoD campaign moment where the game actually takes control away from you and makes you press a couple of arbitrary button prompts at the right time in order to do a thing that those buttons don't normally even do for most of the rest of the game. When all the scripted setpiece extravaganza is happening in Uncharted you're still running, jumping, climbing, and shooting with the same level of input you do in the regular moment to moment gameplay; it's just framed cinematically.

You're kinda like my best friend, occasionally a console game will catch his eye but he's grounded in PC games where as I'm on the other hand always playing on consoles and handhelds.

Consoles automatically loose half their value if you have a decent PC though so its sensible why someone wouldnt run out get one for a few games but in saying that last gen still has a nice catalouge with variety and some games are just really good. My ps3 is modded btw and I play PS2 games on it.

Off the top of my head games like:

Metal Gear Solid 4, Demon Souls, Catherine, Ni No Kuni, Journey, Ratchet games, Armoured Core, Ace Combat, Nier, Gran Turismo 6, Folklore, Katamari Forever and there's really a lot more.

Then other ''games'' like Uncharted 1~3, TLOU, Heavy Rain, and others within the same vein. It's cool having the variety though.

I don't know why people are calling the shooting in Uncharted trilogy bad. Maybe 1 but that's the got improved through the times.

The main issue I had with Uncharted were the cover mechanics being wonky as fuck. To be exact, when I roll and there's an interaction, everything turns to shit.

God dammit I got pissed so bad at times when I wanted to just roll out but I got latched to take cover instead.

Or in 3 where I wanted to roll out of a brawl and instead grabbed the opponent instead which won't let you.
>>
>>336553748
because the shooting IS bad. the way enemies animate and react to bullets cartoonishly, the way drake holds and fires guns and the way those animate(whyt eh fuck doesnt he STILL hold a rifle but to his shoulder? why the fuck is it always jumping around even in 4 still? or the way he fires a pistol and his whole arm recoils back). the physics involved ect. it all looks wrong and feels like shit.

if youre a shooter then it should feel good to shoot things. a lot of things contribute that to that-animations, physics, effects ect. and it doesnt. everything feels off about it. play max payne 3 then go back to uncharted and see how that feels. is the shooting mechanically broken? no. bullets go into the crosshair and thats about it, but it lacks all the details make other's so revered for there shooting like max payne, dead space, fear, re4, killing floor ect.
