First season was all SOL bullshit. Animation was trash, couldn't even be assed to make background characters anything more than 2D models with 2 frames of animation. VAs had horrific line delivery.
Second season was SOL bullshit with 2 or 3 fights thrown in for good measure. But the monsters were flat out not threats. Even the humans were barely threats. Even the fucking dog beat one of them by itself. So much focus on Gary Stu and Mary Sue's romance.
Third season actually had a threat. Mary Sue gets killed off, ending that shitty romance plotline. Monsters are actually threatening. Entire season almost completely made up of fights, I don't think there was a single episode that didn't have at least 1 fight scene. Set up for fourth season will actually have us exploring the world instead of staying on the school grounds forever.
Look, I'm not being an edgemaster saying I'm glad he died. I'm just saying that from a purely objective standpoint, the series got a lot better after he died.

RWBY is alright, its by no means perfect but for what it is/is doing it, I think it should be given praise.
I feel to compare RWBY to a high level production from a large animation studio would be unfair. RT isn't on the same level as Trigger or MAD House that is for sure. I feel it would be more fair to compare it to other webseries such as https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uieM18rZdHY, DBZ Abridged, or some other animated series from Newgrounds.
RT is mostly known for creating Halo machinimas and a few flash animations. RWBY is a pretty big step up for them in terms of production. Releasing 15 minute episodes on a weekly basis is no small feet and RT should be commended. RWBY does have its moments of "QUALITY ANIMATION" as seen in the OP and season 1 is the biggest offender of this. The writing is decent, characters are likable and well written, though is more that could be asked for in other departments. However the fights are were this show really shines. Monty (God rest his soul) did an excellent job on fight choreography and animation (see webm related) and he really showed off the full potential of Poser and other similar software. Season 3 is where I feel RT really begins to get into and explore RWBY's potential. I feel what is really holding RWBY back at this moment is its level of production and the size of its crew. If and when RT gets a larger production crew (IE more/better writers and animators) for RWBY, then this show will truly shine.

RWBY has an interesting history, it started off as an idea from RT's animator, and they decided to give it a shot, so the "Red" trailer was shown off and it was awesome, so they took it from there.
Volume 1 was really rough, but did well enough to gain a following, Volume 2 improved significantly, but cuts resulted in a lot of important things being left out. And Volume 3's purpose seemed to be introducing an proper plot, and altering the tone for the better.
Volume 4 will interesting, the main characters getting actual story arcs and development, especially Yang. The RWBY universe has a lot of potential, Miles and Kerry just need to actually fucking do it justice.
