Around the the mid 2000s when online became more prevalent and DLC became the norm. I don't know if it was because I'd gotten older, but so!ething changed and the magic and wonder was gone. I still love vidya, don't get me wrong, but it never be the same as when you were a kid renting games from Blockbuster and talking pure bullshit with your friends like how you caught a Blastoise in Pokemon Blue.

The acceptance of online gaming, drm and digital distribution. Oh boy I get to pay MORE money for a digital game than I would a physical copy. And the whole culture of releasing day one updates that are over 100mb for physical games. Finish your fucking game before you sell it.

I'd say Amnesia looks pretty innocuous in the grand scheme at this point. Five Nights at Freddy's on the other hand...

I think around when MW2 came out is when I really started paying attention to how shitty the direction everything was going in truly was.
>singleplayer modes that are linear "experiences" and stories
>rampant DLC and locked on-disc content
>most sequels seemed to be getting more and more disappointing and further from what made the original games good

One of the first things I remember being really disgusted with was MM9. It was a great game, but all of the extra game modes and the special stage were locked behind a paywall. I couldn't understand why I'd have to pay for Protoman, who was essentially just Megaman from 4-6.
>>
>>336435678
Minecraft did it for me.

I never really struggled with being out of touch, though. It was easy to accept that it had happened when I remembered that when I was a kid the Pokemon craze kicked off and parents then didn't have a fucking clue what was happening.

When I think kids are into some stupid shit now, I just remember that we had Pokemon.
>>
Is this the thread where people in their mid 20s act old and out of touch and jaded?
>>
>>336438836
Pokemon was at least a finished, competently-designed game though.

I remember playing Minecraft when it was first being posted on /v/ and thought it had potential. Then it kind of just stagnated, promises weren't delivered, and every "feature" was pretty much slapped in from whatever game was popular at the time. It seemed so soulless and without direction, yet people were lapping it up like it was the greatest fucking game ever made.

I can't dispute that. I just mean that Pokemon as a fad was absolutely baffling for adults at the time. It made no sense to them and kids were going absolutely crazy for it beyond belief.

When I remember that something I liked that much had the same effect on adults at the time, it's not hard for me to accept that I'm just not going to understand what kids like today.

I don't know guys. Maybe I was always jaded but I never thought videogames was a clique that belonged only to me, or that I experienced the golden age of it.

Back in the 80s I thought the base gameplay of most platformers were idiotic. Rewarding or demanding the player ignore his enemies just to beat the clock and move forward. My favorite games were always adventure games, but the meaning of the genre so divided that no one can agree what it means anymore, and just shove it on the end of another adequate descriptor.

I admit in the 90s I leaned closer to Doom clones than emerging 3D shooters, but I never shook my head and said "These kids today".

I like to tell myself that YouTube is just a boom that will eventually fade and Pewdiepie, Markiplier, Game Grumps, etc. will all be left poor. Well, probably not Pewdiepie if he's being smart with his money, which I honestly doubt. Charity donations or not, he'll get too full of himself and having a girlfriend will be his downfall.

I've heard that Arin is terrified of this bubble popping, hence Game Grumps having a shitload of spinoff channels. As soon as the YouTube teat dries up, Suzy will take all of his shit and bail.
>>
>>336439514
The Let's Play core concept isn't even remotely new. People have been watching other people do things they don't wish to engage in themselves since the birth of culture itself. Theater, gladiatorial combat, sports, MST3K. LPs are just the latest iteration for a more recent medium.

It's inevitable. The popularity of all things is inevitable. Theater attendance dropped when movies became widely accessible. Movie attendance dropped when the internet took off. It'll always have some life of its own, but it can't stay relevant forever. Remember just how much history of progress humanity has already put behind it.

Eventually she'll start wanting things.

Then, those things won't be good enough. They'll be boring, and not the most recent thing that you need to have because you have a rich boyfriend.

Then she'll want a new house, or a car, or even a baby so Felix will feel required to stay with her, possibly even marry her.

Then, once the YouTube generation grows up and eventually another one DOESN'T follow, she'll divorce and leave him alone and lonely until he dies.

That's not "something that might happen," it's not "me being edgy," it's how women work.

Cliche as it may sound. I guess the whole gaming "culture" in general when normies and SJWs started infesting it.

More precisely somewhere around the time when being into video games is suddenly cool. You know, when the whole "such a nerd" schtick kicked in. I love video games, and still do, for the simple reasons; I just want to do some silly fun shit in a virtual world. I ain't got no friends when I was a kid so video games and the simple joy it provided was something I appreciated.

Some point there was people who have no social problems suddenly thinks it's cool to be a nerd. Just by wearing a mario or zelda shirt, now you are a nerd. Just because that girl posted a picture of her with a gameboy, now she's a nerd. At that time I didn't really minded it, video games were just getting attention by more audience that's all I thought.

And now, those people wants to restrain video games. Now everything that is video games gotta have a political agenda.

The worst part, is that THIS is the norm. And people like us are the devients for not seeing the problematic themes or whatever buzzword they want to throw in there. Sure you can ignore it, and that is no difficult task. But you can't deny that these are the times when that Simpsons line is happening exactly.

I guess it has maybe, but it's not something I think about or care about whether it has or not. There have always been trends I never liked or cared for, but it's not enough to make me jaded because of them existing. There are things that I'd like to see more of, but like everything else, if I want it, I have to go do it myself which I plan to do.

Your 20s are the most difficult years of your life. Everyone talks about teenagers but high school is a joke and living with your parents is easy. In your 20s you really come to find who you are, your opinions and tastes change drastically, you learn more about life and the world than any other time period. It makes sense to become jaded with childhood hobbies in that period.

This is a diatribe. I won't try to hide my disappointment. This is just one oldfag's perspective.

I hate how terribly narcissistic the gaming community has become.

Everywhere I turn, some streamer is shoving their face into the bottom of their screen during gameplay. At the same time they generally have a twitter and youtube where they shove their face into more gameplay. If that isn't enough their real social life usually ends up bleeding into their online content via "update" videos that are just attention seeking vlogs disguised as meaningful content. Almost all of the big streamers and Let's Players have some kind of dumbass "Hey guys, I'm depressed. I'm taking a break from releasing videos. here is 30 minutes of me explaining why. also like and subscribe" or some such shit. Like it's fucking Days of Our Lives.

Gaming used to be about sitting in a dark corner at night and getting through those secret levels so you could tell your buddy about it the next day. Now gaming is all about flat-brim hats, expensive headsets, gaming chairs, twitch cleavage streams, recycled memes, and award shows with unenthusiastic celebrity hosts.

The swag generation won. I concede. I'm going to take up whittling or something.

See, I personally don't mind people talking about video games. Or seeing other people discuss it. It's fine, do it in public, I don't really care.

It's just I want them to enjoy the games for what it is and maybe have some understanding for what they are. It's just so jarring when people nowadays treats video games like something with a harmful intention hiding within.

>but those stupid anime dating simulators

I totally understand being flustered by this. The trick to getting them is to stop seeing them as a 'dating sim game' and instead see them as essentially a 60+ hour long anime with an elaborate multi-linear storyline. This doesn't stop most of them from sucking, but when you look at them as super cost effective anime instead of a watered down game that exclusively simulates trying to get into lolipants their existence makes much more sense.

Like a movie commentary it gives insight and greater appreciation of the media. Live com is universally bad though; even post com 'lpers' I like have live coms that I cant stand.

Most of the people I've met IRL they were stupid and I couldn't force myself to stay interested in them.
I've had very nice discussions on 4chan that I would have never expected to have IRL.

Though, on average and by first assumption, everyone is retarded and I act accordingly.

I'd say people are as stupid here as outside, but here on 4chan you're more likely to get into discussion and arguments on subjects more relevant to your interests and with more information and other stuff to back them up.
Also alternative views and opinions, especially if they're socially frowned upon (/pol/ /new/ etc).

On average, 4chan is more desirable than irl.

But now the normies are slowly starting to trickle into even that.

Its all a symptom of our general societal decline.

I always was PC gamers through and through but all my friends in school had consoles so I ended buying a PS2 and an Xbox 360 to play with them.
When school was over I went back to PC gaming exclusively and it was so much better. But slowly and surely over the last 8 years it has been getting worse and worse. To the point where I can't tell if I'm playing with consoletards with a PC or something.

What I do now is I just stick around the communities of good dedicated players in the games I play and never interact with the rest of the plebs.
It made gaming a lot more enjoyable for me.

Losing "it" only happens if you lose interest in new vidya altogether. Let's Players and people who watch them are a subculture, in the same way that people who play MOBAs are a subculture, or people who play FPS games, etc.

Just because you have an inherent disinterest in something doesn't add up to what you are attempting to imply.

If though, Let's Players and people who watched them somehow "ruined" video games for you altogether; then sure, you are no longer with it but as that just leads right back to my primary counter-point. You need to lose interest in new video games to truly be out of "it".

The problem is that tv sports or gladiators were usually professional. Most youtubers are fucking horrible at games. I think it is just a "being alone" thing. People watch them for the conversation, the quips, like when you watch a D-series flick with a bro. Youtubers provide that. A virtual "friend". They could be doing origami or potato peeling, most watchers would not care. They just want a friendly voice.

Even through matchmaking most games allow you to play with friends and teamspeak will never die.

So long as you manage to find the underground communities of good players and stick with them you can have good players to play with that will make the experience bearable and will also make you improve.

I mostly play shooters and I don't have an issue when it comes to playing with and against good players. If you also don't want to do normal matchmaking to avoid the plebs yuo can always play ESL/ESEA, amateur leagues and private matches.

And then once you've honed your skills go back to normal pubs and become a pubstar.

post-irony killed me entirely, and a lack of interest in basically anything new vidya-wise dug my grave. why does everything have to be esports now?

when i was getting abused for picking my best hero in dota (winrate and comfort/skill wise) into good matchups purely because they weren't meta at the time i realised maybe this era of ESPORTS isn't for me.

i really have no idea what the fuck anyone is doing anymore.

You've only got yourself to blame.

Let's Play.

I was still with it in the early days when it was about passion and everyone who wanted to become Youtube famous was told that hey're a piece of shit.
Now, whenever there's a new release, hundreds of assholes jump on it to churn out blind content as quickly as possible so they can ride the first wave the game makes and hopefully get a piece of the pie. It has become near impossible to find informative LPs that edit things down so I don't have to waste my time watching some faggot run in circles because they can't figure out how to progress.

In the same vein, streaming. The things people do to get ahead on Twitch are just pathetic, from obnoxious donation/subscription messages that destroy any value the stream might have had to pretending to be a cripple or spreading malicious rumours about their competition.

Also e-Sports. Just a bunch of kids being exploited by an industry. "Professional video game player" is the new "professional video game tester".

So basically fuck everything.

You can use a console command to mute people.
But yeah, it's a bother.

>>336446072
i used to play a lot of lone druid and had a few games where people on my team would chase my summon around to deny it for whatever reason.

flame if i fuck everything or anything up is usually justifiable, but when i realised people are willing to ruin games purely because i'm not copying whatever the pro players are doing it just deflated my interest in most vidya.

i've just been playing older singleplayer stuff now, but i still kinda wish esports and gachaboxes as microtransactions didn't make things so shitty.

;_; when will the vidya renaissance come to end these dark ages

Sorry to ask but what's your mmr? I never have issues like that in my bracket anymore.

I see a lot of people from /vg/ complain all the time about having to play with russians and toxic players, when they themselves are just as bad and toxic.

I honestly never have these issues in my bracket, only very rarely do I get people who do shitty stuff, and even then it isn't that big of an issue.

Also no matter what you do don't let it get under your skin, sometimes you play like shit and people flame you, that's part of the game. Just move on and win next game.

it was like 3.5k a long time ago, not like it's high or anything but i think it falls under "could be worse". i don't really expect every game to be perfect or have amazing players carrying me, it's just that esports infesting pubs as much as it does is something that stops the game being interesting, at least for me. i've been playing on/off since pre-release in dota 2 (back when beta invites were >$100) and the decline into esports is something i've experienced first hand, it's kinda weird. it's nice people can be set for life off being good at the game, though.

i don't particularly like the direction the game is going either (valve are kikes and the current comeback gold situation is bleh.), so it was pretty simple to just stop playing - but i do miss playing pretty frequently until i remember how the game is now.

i also realised everything else recent/popular enough to pub whenever is similarly esports/twitch focused and just went back to playing ancient shit i'd never got around to doing, it's nice.

Twitch depresses me sometimes. So many people think it's easy to just stream and entertain people and that they can make an easy living off it. Everyone has that one friend who is a streamer and desperately wants you to watch them.
>>
>>336446181
You can literally ignore all of these things though, you are the one choosing to expose yourself to them.

Swap it up occasionally myself, but 2D is always more superior.

Video game related, I'm still with it, but I don't agree with exclusive preorder or dlc bullshit.

I'm only 4.5k, playing on EU West, and I very rarely run into shit like that. Mostly everyone is nice to me.

I hated the last patch when it was Invoker and Spectre 24/7, this patch seems a little more interesting and Slark is great and he's my favorite and most played hero so I'm pretty happy.

I just don't know, I build what I think is right, if someone flames me for my build (never happens anymore anyway) I just mute them and move on.
Just keep a positive attitude, and people will be nice.

Anyone in here tried going back and playing an old multiplayer game you thought would be dead, but miraculously you find out it's still active?

For me, it was Day of Defeat: Source. Been playing on avalanche, anzio and some custom maps for hours. This game's still got it.

There's a mod for Jedi Academy that still has some populated servers every now and then.

>>336446850
maybe if i start playing again, maybe things will be more interesting a few patches from now - i haven't played in six months or so and i don't see that changing too much. my absolute favorite hero hasn't been viable forever, but it makes me happy to see lone druid is good.

it's kinda sad to watch super high level pubs on streams and they're still full of people flaming and bitching at each other, that's what killed my motivation to try super hard originally because it really does look like your games don't improve much no matter the mmr.

i do miss being able to shit out a giant networth advantage with my pretty-great tier farming skills, though - that was probably the most fun thing, and it got progressively harder and more dangerous/game ruining to do as time went on.

thanks for listening, though.

I expect to get burnt out on Dota eventually as well. I'm going to hit the 3k hour mark this week.
>>
>>336447324
i watched a lot of replays and stuff so my hours were super inflated, but i got to around 2k games or so

kinda wish i was still interested in it honestly, time fillers of that magnitude are pretty hard to come by.
