Microsoft tried to force their way into digital only. When Sony edged their consumers in. Nintendo gives fuck all on appealing discounts, keeping old games and even NES roms at ridiculous prices.
Steam absolutely obliterates all of them. But on a console basis, Sony is really the only ones making incredible leeway into digital distribution.

This really pissed me off. I'm mainly a PC gamer, but I enjoyed a PS3 back when the console was still relevant so I decided to pick up a PS4 recently. I'm one of the few people who actually pays for PS+ for the free games, since I generally prefer single player games, and I couldn't believe the garbage they were giving me. On PS3 I was getting AAA games which I didn't have plans to purchase, but still had fun with them. Games like Far Cry 3 and one of the Batman games. I just got off my PS4 from playing one of this months PS+ games, Table Top Racing. Jesus fucking Christ, what were they thinking? A sluggish, boring racer with a tacked on upgrade system and hideous environmental geometry. The cars and effects look decent, sure, but the rest of the worlds are hideous.

You know the first time I ever decided to subscribe to ps+ was actually a great deal for me. It was way back when Sleeping Dogs came out and I really wanted to play it, but decided to wait for a price drop since it was single player. After a couple of weeks it pops up on the ps store as part of the monthly games list which still wasn't saving me money, until I discovered that PSN subscription was on sale in my local GAME store.
I ended up getting Sleeping Dogs for £10 cheaper than retail price as well as the years worth of ps+ games (included Dragons Dogma and Spec Ops: The Line which I loved).
It's all been down hill after that first year and now it's pretty much mandatory.

Sony can then further invest into big 1st party exclusives or exclusive contracts, like the 2 FromSoft PS4 exclusives we know about (yes I'm aware of FromSoft's next multiplat game. But there will be 2 more exclusives on top of that)
It's all a cycle. You pay $40 extra every year but on the other hand the company gets more room for big deals.
