Yeah. It might have to do a bit with the fact that it was made so you never actually have to fight excessive random battles to keep up, but it is a pretty simple game anyway so there's that too. It's not like rpgs were remotely complex unless they were srpgs anyway, hell it's still that way today.

You are also wrong about the doll. Chrono dies, and the characters do care, which is why they use the doll to replace him in the timeline during the moment of his death. The doll doesn't replace him in the plot.

The vast majority of IV is easy right up until the last few bosses, then it gets fairly balls to the wall. Story and combat system are still top tier and it has a lot of fun mini games thrown in. I personally preferred it over 3.

I liked the general orders, it made me feel like an actual commander instead of god, individually controlling each and every little move my unions made.
I'm with you on the outfitting, though. If you can choose wither your guys can hold a sword with one or two hands, you should be able to switch up the actual weapon.

3 has more diversity when it comes to building characters, but 4 has this magic combing system and a neat two row system so every character is in combat. Also blocking will give you a chance to learn enemy moves off of every enemy instead of just selecting one enemy to watch for a turn, which is the best.

The story is pretty much just character building for Fou Lu for the most part, there's a lot of smaller story arches for the protagonists prior to the main big plot getting revealed.
I hate how people say that though, like how people say BoF3 is slow to start because you spend the first half of the game as a kid. Nigga the game started, just because the main villain hasn't been revealed and isn't attacking the protagonist doesn't mean the story isn't doing anything.

Disgusting, washed out colors and terrible audio ruin it. For 1 I recommend the romhack that puts tomato's superior translation on the nes version. There is somethings changed as the nes version had more restrive character limit so certain enemy names and dialouge is butchered but still it remains pretty accurate. For 2 the snes version is acceptable as is having a great and pretty accurate traaccurate.

For awhile 1 on gba was the better version having a much better translation. However now that you play a version that has the original audio and color while still maintaing most of tomato's translation there is no real reason to play the gba ones other then maybe fuck around with some of the glitches exclusive to those vetsions.
