The developers suddenly thought their were "lesser" kids games.
So they decided to change the tone and such for later installments.
It happens to a lot of devs that used to make these kind of games and suddenly think they're above those kind of games. Ironically, making games that are visually more impressive but mechanically inferior.
They always want the prestige the people in the film industry game by trying to make games more like movies.
