A summary of what the story in MKX leads to:
Lui Kang is now undead, is now the ruler of Shinnok's Netherrealm and power hungry.
Raiden has decided that in order to protect Earthrealm, he will not defend it but attack and kill anyone who threatens it.
Outworld is now ruled by Kotal Kahn, who had once inspired the aztecs on Earthrealm and had an affinity for Earthream, but had decided to bolster his own forces in the last moment by helping Shinnok conquer Earthrealm in the end of MKX. He was stopped by Raiden who then wanted Outworld to be permanently erased. Kotal Kahn instead pleaded to the Elder Gods for a chance to defend his honor. And from this point onward, a new tournament was founded where this time Outworld would defend itself against Earthrealm, and Earthrealm potentially from Netherrealm forces of the undead Lui Kang and his queen Kitana.
And here you thought MKX had a shit story because Clueless Pedro said so.
