Start picking the right hunts. Guild10 Advanced: Fury on the Mount is great for Skymeralds. 2% for each of the eight slots of the first line of rewards, and 2% for each of the subquest slots.

Carving is best.

Like, if you carve tail, smash head, carve body, and complete subquest, that's well over 20% for a skymerald per quest.

I recently got Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, it's pretty good most of the time. Thing is, I just got to the volcano for the first time through the elder's quests (which pretty much means Lv4), and I was wondering where could I get Lightcrystals. >>336324834
>Low Rank

Everybody starts out on this first. Rarity 1-4 equipment and some shitty charms.

>High Rank

Everything does more damage and has higher defense. Gathering points and monster carves yield in a new tier of items. Rarity 5-7 equipment and some much less shitty charms. Not to be confused with HR or Hunter Rank.

Non-G games like MHX/Generations end here, though High Rank.

>G-Rank

Even more monster damage and defense, again there are new items obtained from gathering points and carves. Rarity 8-10 equipment and some better charms.

Pretty much a multiplayer exclusive extension to the re-releases with 'G' in Japan or 'U' elsewhere pasted on them, but can definitely be done solo.

I'm mostly using Lances, and Hammers. Dual Swords (Estoc, Gunhammer Prototype and Order Rapier respectively. I'm afraid I'm guiding myself a little too much by the looks of the weapons) mainly for minor quests like "slay x number of monsters" where more mobility and speed is useful. Tried to like Gunlances but the lack of mobility compared to Lances kills it for me, that chain hopping is just something else

Right now I need the Lightcrystals for the Lance and Dual Swords, specially the DS, since their low sharpness makes them useless for any "big" monster
>>
>>336328175
I heard that you can mine them at the swap, at the caves, but so far I've had no luck. Do they even drop at low rank?

>>336329375

GS is also a nice option
>>
>>336322871
The Absolute Bowgun was pretty fucking good since it rapid fired every element except dragon

The problem was that in FU, HBG shat all over LBG and by the time you can make white fatalis gear there's probably not a lot left to use it on anyway

GS, Hammer, and HBG really were FU's holy trinity, there were very few monsters that couldn't be easily handled by at least one of them
>>
>>336329884
They do, but at a frustratingly rare %.
Which is why the tend to be in quite short supply until you get those farm upgrades and reach high rank, since high rank swamp and snowy mountain mining drops them as well.

Farm and various other upgrades like having more cats to cook for you are unlocked per rank in the village.

Mining spot +2 is unlocked with the Hypnoc urgent that opens into Village HR and +3 is after the Double Monoblos one.
So both are HR exclusive.

As for weapons, a good elemental SnS can do work, but if you want to balance out heavy hits and speed LS might be more your speed.
There's also Lance/GL but you'll have to decide on if you want to prioritize evasion or guarding and if you're not too sure on how both work right now you might want to hold off on them.

As for bowguns, they take a bit to learn with the various ammo types and ranges, but they do work.
I'd easily recommend a HBG for when you have to do the large monster urgents like Lao and Shen.

GS largely uses the draw attack (charged or not), rolling, and then sheathing. Because you have the weapon on your back most of the time it's actually quite mobile. Armor skills that benefit charging speed and unsheathe attacks really help bring more out of it.

Bowgunning is a bit tougher to get into but HBG along with GS are consistently good weapons in the franchise
>>
>>336331362
>>336332038

I see. There's still quite a few ways to go for those upgrades, then
Funnily enough, the first weapon I stuck with when I got the game was the Long Sword, AR comparable with the GS and pretty good speed to boost. It seems like a really good weapon type, but I find Lances and Hammers to be more fulfilling for some reason.

The GS could work with that tactic, I should give it a shot and see how it goes

The Lance is a weapon I really like, it's pretty mobile with the evades, has a strong defense and rather fast and precise attacks. The low speed when drawn can be made up with hopping or the charge attack, so that's not that big of a drawback. The disadvantage I see for the Lance, more than anything, is that it doesn't really have an attack to capitalize on when a monster is asleep or immobilized. And Gunlances are cool, but I find them hard to use without the hops the Lance has

And I'll see about learning bowgunning, if it's that good it'll surely pay off to learn how to do it. How are bows, now that we're at it?

Sorry for taking so long to answer, I was getting beat up by an enraged Red Khezu. Shame on me. They're easy enough, normally, but they take really long to die, and the rage phase always ends up badly for me
>>
>>336333504

For the most part you should use full armor sets, because if the sum of a skill is 10 or more you get an effect from it, and a full set will generally have enough points to activate a few. Some skills can stretch beyond 10 and work in 5 point increments from there, like Guard +2 which is great for Lances.

In some games clownsuiting is what some do to get very specific armor skills they want at the endgame, like pic related in 4U

I personally just have a stick up my ass about Crit Draw, especially when all the new movements with GS can lead you to more damage than just draw charges and sheathing constantly.
And then that's just compounded when people go in and start saying how you're "worthless" without it and they promptly triple cart trying to emulate their idols.

If it works for you and you like it, there's no harm there. But I don't run into a lot of people with that exact set that are of the type to choose it on their own.

A GS without Focus however, that's just bad.
>>
>>336338114
It "should" just mean you plug in your controller, start up the SCP monitor and see if it works.

A lot of set up with things like this can be pretty individual since how it interacts with your computer is different than how it does with mine.
>>
>>336338265
Ah, of course. Sorry. The SCP Monitor seems to detect the controller, but it also says that the Host Adress is disconnected.

And the SCP Server thing says that the root hub is already running. I think I have to solve that somehow

In regards to the armor set I'm arguing about with anon:

>Sharpness +1 increases the weapon's sharpness level
>Focus speeds up GS charging
>Critical Draw gives the most used GS attack +100% affinity (so 25% extra damage) on unsheathe
>Sheathe Control is a compound skill of Punish Draw and Quick Sheath
>First one contributes towards KO/stun damage on the draw attack and increases its damage a little
>Second one is obvious

These are all some nice benefits that compliment the weapon and it doesn't really require a charm to work, which if good enough can be used to get in an extra skill.

Of course, these cannot substitute actual skill. But depending on the weapon and style of play used, they can really compliment the weapon well. Like, HBG and Swaxe users love Evade Extend, and it's obvious you don't go Evade Lancing without Evasion +3.

>>336338140
Focus is fantastic. If I was to have only one armor skill for GS that'll be it.

CritDraw is just a bit more damage, and I take it that some abuse it since they're not as confident sticking to the monster. Sheath Control just compliments hitting the head.

Keep in mind that the results to achieve those required a clusterfuck of armor pieces, which is strongly the case at the end of 4U.

Since we're talking about FU, Nargacuga armor is a pretty good basic choice for Evade Lance users because of the evasion skills it has on it, though Evade Distance might fuck up finer positioning.

I fought many a Kushala Daora solo to merely get enough Daora Hardhorns, you break the damn thing and yet you still have a 40% chance of not getting one in the rewards box.

As long as you stay strong you should get what you want, though. Hammer, HH, and Bowgunners do kinda rely on those in the party with cutting weapons to get tails, mind you.

>>336341000
That's the icon used for a Rathalos Plate.

Nice trips.
>>
>>336320583
That's not how statistics work, anon. You get an F in maths.

Breaking and cutting everything and using a carving god set gives you 3 tail chances at 3-7% for rare drop depending on difficulty. 1 2-4% chance per break and 5 1-2% chances on body carves.

They do NOT add together. You can get a shit load of carve chances but the drop rate is still stupidly low.

Even the ability that x3 your quest rewards only gives you extra rolls on the loot table. Nothing actually increases the drop rate.

Most rooms I enter are usually just dominated with at least one or two IG users. CB isn't that common of a sight for me, there's surprisingly plenty of Swaxe in the mix as well.

Though Star Knight is fairly common, I've seen at least three or so people with Excello Z armor (Molten Tigrex) which is kind of interesting because it's not particularly much good.

Also new to MH. Been progressing reasonably well on 4u, currently at caravan 10 and wondering if relying on evade 3 is going to eventually fuck me over? 99% switch axe user if it matters. Would definitely believe not using more weapon types will fuck me over.

Mah nigga, too bad it's going to be the weapon shitters will default to in Generations

Anyway you want Evade Extender because it can take advantage of the Swaxe's large sidestep windows after attacks, but Evasion +1 on top after that is alright if there's room after the typical Blademaster stuff like S+1 or Razor Sharp, or both (via compound skills).

In terms of expanding your armory, are you looking for some better swaxes or simply other weapons to look into? Hammer isn't overly bad by itself, it's just made obsolete. After all, Gunlance is considered one of the weaker weapons in 4U and that doesn't stop people using and enjoying.

Hammers in 4U are kind of underpowered. Charge Blade, despite a more technical weapon with two upkeeps (phials and shield charge) has a low skill floor and has insane KO power that puts the Hammer and HH to shame, provided it's using impact phials (which are buffed by 30% with Artillery Novice A FIVE SLOT SKILL).

With proper usage, it is excellent at scoring the first two KOs during a hunt (which is major considering hunts don't last THAT long in multi), especially due to its ability to punish monsters for fucking attacking. Tigrex charging at you? Evade? No fuck that, guardpoint that shit for free damage and even combo it into the super burst if it staggers.

It got some nerfs in X, though its KO power is still strong. Hammers and HH are indirectly buffed because monster exhaustion overrides its enraged state in that game.

>>336352218
LBG in 4U's G-Rank is more known for hame, so you lock down the monster a shitload with statu for everyone else to wail on. The Seregios LBG line though is kind of neat; it rapid fires Normal S Lv2 and Slicing S, and reloads one shot per dodge. Elemental gunning is still a thing.

Pierce gunning for HBG is where it's at in 4U. Pellet shot is kill yourself tier. Regardless, it's still good.

Bowguns in X get built-in shot types depending on guns. The styles have different takes on mobility.

Bow gets the power shot type in 4U, and the Seregios bow is the one everybody uses because of it. In X/Generations, they all now have both power and arc type shots by default and the different styles gut out one of them. Adept/Bushido is actually super popular because you can dodge into an instant Lv3 charge and it keeps the power shot. And dodging with that style by default is like free evasion skills.

It's a shame to hear that, I like hammers here in FU. They do their job well and are pretty strong on their own. But then again there's also a lot of weapons I can't get to try like the Charge Blade and Switch Axe which seem really cool. It's a shame
>>

>>

Slicing S is pretty great when rapid fired. It doesn't get a damage reduction for rapid fire and absolutely shreds Frenzy/Apex.

Not as reliable as pierce, sure, but take Vayu Sedition on a G Expedition with Slicing S and combines and see for yourself.

It's no joke. In G-Rank it's shooting volleys of four for one shot and is actually pretty good at knocking monsters out of Frenzy or Apex quicker.

Also, you could try these recommendations.

http://pastebin.com/w2M7usnX

GameFAGs also has its own bowgun guide with armor recommendations

>>336353741
On the bright side, 3rd gen and up have a more tolerable Hunting Horn. Everyone likes a HH player, provided they're also hitting the monster.

Switch Axe is kinda fun, though it seems to be two different weapons they share some similar traits. Charge Blade is silly, but it's fun. Insect Glaive in 4U is absurdly powerful for what it is.

Don't forget that movesets have gotten fleshed out overtime, from FU to 4U the SnS got plenty more attacks to use.

Yeah, people tend to use DB or LS when they start the game and they move onto other weapons once they clear up small mob quests and get a hang of things or get rekt by Gore Magala. Try out some other weapons in the tutorials that have good walk speeds.

When I started out 4U I was using a Lance against it, beat it but it was a bit of a slog since Nerscylla likes moving around a lot.

You can build all weapons/armors without ever having to touch plates/gems even once. They're only needed for the final upgrades, which are minimal at best since the game only goes to HR.

Having to farm "variant" monsters for the tickets is a pain, but at least it's a guaranteed drop.

>>336358309

You don't even need gems with the variant armors due to how stupidly OP they are.

Narga variant:
>Evasion 2
>Evade distance
>Critical Eye 3 (+30%)
>Critical Up (crits do 45% instead of 25%)

Hermitaur variant:
>bubbles (evasion 1 + constitution 1)
>+20 attack (attack up L) when you have a debuff (bubbles counts as a debuff 24/7)
>speed sharpening or recoil down

Rathian variant:
>Status up +2
>Status crit
>Critical eye +3
>Wide range +2

And so on. Basically, each one is built to be absolutely perfect for a specific style. Narga is amazing for any crit weapons, Hermitaur is all around great, and Rathian is outstanding for a status SnS or DB.

I can understand variant armors, but I mean the rest of catalog. Game appears to be a little anal about them.

Where is the variant armor with Focus
>>
>>336359057

One-eyed is garbage, and is arguably the worst of all variant armors:

>guts
>challenger 2
>negate stun
>unceasing (increases crit rate up to 30% if you never stop hitting the monster, pointless if you have critical eye +3)

>>336359174

Crimson Arzuros:

>focus
>hostility (attack up L whenever you are injured and not at full HP)
>defense up L
>constitution +2
>>
>>336359368
As far as GS goes Hostility sounds alright but Constitution and Defense L not so much, don't think I need those hilarious superman dives. Seems to be made for something that could use Focus in the background.

I think I'll look into that Black armor set or a clownsuit to get a sharpness related skill.
