Just got a 3ds. Looking to get into the FE series. Is this a good starting point or should I just jump straight to Fates?

Play Fire Emblem on the GBA. Then attempt to play the Gamecube one. Skip Awakening as it teaches you bad tendencies and will make it harder to adjust to all other Fire Emblem games. If you want the newest one, then get Conquest. It does not allow grinding of any sorts except for supports and has some unique levels. Just prepare to get pissed off when chapter 18 and up come about.

Start with 7, which is just called Fire Emblem in the US. If you want to get right into new FE for some reason, either play Awakening first or skip it completely and go to Fates because Fates is almost a straight upgrade from it.

aside from actually being a non-gimmick level, that was the only level in the game that actually made me want to quit. After my first playthrough, which was on hard, I dreaded playing this game again because of that specific chapter
I had to give Benny a hex-spear or whatever the +8res spear is and let him solo everything. It was the ONLY chapter I had to use a cheap tactic with.

Yes, it's a perfectly fine entry point. You'd only find it "Casualized babby shit" if you had played any previous FE, which you haven't. Everyone I know who started with Awakening has said how much they love it and that it's their hardest game on the 3ds. I can't comment on Fates though since it's not out here yet.
Birthright is literally a perfect place to start. Awakening kicked my ass at first because I was completely new to the series, but by chapter 7 it was piss easy, even for me.
Birthright is similar but it's more fun. And then of course, Conquest has the godly gameplay.
Start with either Birthright, FE7, or the first if you want to be hardcore. But if you enjoy the series after those, definitely play Gaiden, Genealogy of the Holy War (best game in the series), Thracia 776, and Binding Blade.

If you're going into Fates after, here's a few things.
Birthright, I thought, was actually way better than Awakening mostly because of the new Stance mechanics and I'm a sucker for the Japanese style. The last few chapters become purely stat-based though and it becomes Ryoma Emblem by then anyway.
Conquest is god-tier, one of the best gameplay wise in the series. Story is meh at best but the gameplay is so good I basically forgot about it. Super fun maps and legitimate strategy.
Revelation is actually fucking incredible. It's fucking amazing how badly Intelligent Systems can balance a Fire Emblem game. I legitimately believe that they didn't play test this because of how bad some of the characters are. On Hard mode, Orochi gets doubled + ORKO and her join chapter, Hana has two less base strength despite joining two chapters later, and Odin is just a fucking trainwreck. 2/3rds of the Nohr characters get pretty shafted and the story is literally the stupidest thing ever.

Sacred Stones is better if you never grind on the open world. The difficulty curve will be just right and the maps will be pretty fun.
Much more rewarding leveling Amelia through battles instead of grinding.
