I don't think it's godawful---it's actually really audacious and strange in ways other FFs weren't. That first disk has got some damn cool stuff, but as a whole I didn't care for it.

Yes, but like all FF games, it's flawed.

Paramilitary theme, war economies, political drama, swords and magic, and romance cast a wide net over the audience but they fall short after disk one in some instances.

One-offs you drag along for the whole game. Quistis and Irvine in particular could be cut or relegated to Timber Owl status and nothing would be lost from the story.

Creative take on magic

The good? Unique abilities for most summons, lots of combinations to achieve full junction slots.
The bad? Summon affinity is a non-factor, you will mostly equip +%str/hp in your limited slots, junction swapping, and limit breaks outpace everything.

There's plenty more I'm sure people could hit on. FF8 is still my favorite installment but my god do I hate how good Aura and Meltdown are as spells.
