Male characters don't have to be ridiculously muscular and covered in blades and armor.
Characters don't need to start tearing limbs off of their opponent after a match, when the first couple specials or even regular moves would have easily killed them, let alone X-rays moves, let alone the first hit of a fatality.
But all that shit happens anyways. Why? Because Mortal Kombat sells itself on exaggeration. Being over-the-top. That's how they got famous. It's how they put themselves on the map. Otherwise, they'd just be "Rotoscope fighting game #7" and Street Fighter would have buried them in the 90s.

I really wanted to see the vampire race of Outworld get more representation or at least exposure. One of the coolest things about the PS2-era MK games was Deception's "Adventure RPG" mode. It was just really fucking cool being able to visit all the MK universe locations and interact with different characters there.

MKX did a ME3: "look how special the humans are!" with their crew of Special Forces bores and then to rub salt into the MK wound they flooded the game with horror characters no one gives a fuck about. Gameplay was improved, art direction improved in some areas (Kotal, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, old man Kang to name a few) and shat the bed with others (anyone special forces save for Jax, Millena save for her vampire costume, Baraka to name some) and overall was just a weaker experience than MK9.
It's clear WB did some major meddling and it's not going to get better either but NRS aren't blameless. TLDR: MKX was excessive with the gore, too safe with everything else.
