Actually just finished my first play about a month ago. Usually kept the music at default but switched it up on occasion.
I stayed with the one-handed sword for a while but switched to heavy weaponsafter Shinji diedand ended up liking them pretty well. Thor was a badassed persona too, so that whole arrangement worked out pretty well.

Magic is good early to mid game, fizzles out by late game sorta. By sorta I mean basically if you're going for a very specific ending, magic is useless.
Physical becomes very good in middish to late game powerhouse. You still want magic because some enemies will have varying weaknesses. There is no easy mode in Nocturne if that's what you're getting at, even physical builds can be cock blocked.

You take Aigis for her buffs and Aki for his debuffs. This make pretty much anything a joke a really. A party member with every buff in the game is never mediocre.
She is also super tanky, so you don't need as much healing with her or even need a healer becuase of this. Buffs and debuffs are broken just as they have always been in megaton games.

During boss fights Full Assault on damage dealers, Heal/Support on healers/supporters. Against normal mobs all on Knock Down

It depends heavily on the party member
Generally, having them on knock down is the must helpful thing.
If you want them to heal put them on heal/support
Aki and Aigis will prioritize buffs unless someone's health is really low.
Mitsuru will sometimes try to charm enemies if your health isn't low
People without healing spells will use healing items and status effect removal items.
Full assault is for when you want them to go full offense.
Conserve SP is used for when you want them to not bother with magic and focus on phys.
Assign target makes them focus solely on one enemy and will move on to the next enemy once they kill it.
Standby is better used when an enemy is down and you won't want him to get up, or if the enemy has a magic/phys shield.
You can turn on tactics memory in the settings so that your tactic set up saves between fights
Also, remember to always scan enemies, because it affects the AI of your allies
