Hm, if you're worried about it becoming a clusterfuck than probably nothing will help; it's basically been that way since the very first game unfortunately. Vesperia's my personal favorite, but if you get pissed off when a group of enemies stunlocks you, then that's going to happen in basically every tales game.
That being said, Vesperia has some of the most broken combat in the series, so there's plenty of easy win strategies once you get near the endgame in that one at least.

I hated the focus on Ludger in X2. There was room to so many cool directions for the original character, but they're all barely explored, even in their side chapters. Hel, most of it just retreads stuff from X1.
My favorite part of the entire game plot wise was when Fractured Milla realizes that she's what keeping Jude's Milla from coming back, and then he rubs salt on her wound by letting her know that the reason they never met in her world is because she murdered his father.
That and how he basically goes "Yeah, you're not special to me like the Milla I know". It was heavy hitting, and it was the kind of character development I wanted to see.
