Who /hype/ here?

No one, the vast majority of /v/ has been repeatedly burned by procedurally generated garbage, as well as fuckwits trying to profit off of the space exploration autism a lot of us have. So now we wait, with wary trepidation, before allowing ourselves to fall for the hype train.

If a game is great and you don't get hype, you get a great surprise. If a game is shit and you don't get hype, nothing lost. If a game is great and you got hyped, you enjoy the game as you would normally. If a game is shit and you for hyped, you get crushed and feel like shit for believing in devs, further jading yourself to vidya.

Not getting hyped is always the best course of action. Always.

This game would be much much cooler if:

>billions of randomly generated planets was reduced to thousands of actually crafted planets
>the game supported actual multiplayer, where you could team up with friends or attack opposing groups
>it was played with servers where your crafting, building, etc. retained permanence
>everyone starts in the outer rings and goal is to reach the center
>played in 'seasons' where each season is a reset
>fun rewards that carry to next season for players that reach the center, were the first one there, built the most stuff, killed the most players, etc. etc.

You might be lucky and keep finding new and different creatures, or you might be unlucky and find the same animals on every planet you visit.

The wonders of procedural generation.
>>
>>336240083
But what's the point of exploring procedurally generated environments that don't have any backstory behind it?

"Oh that over there looks interesting, i wonder who built it and what purpose it served... Oh wait it was just randomly generated by the engine, there's no reason to actually explore it in depth"

Exploring in games with procedurally generated environments isn't exploring. It's pointless shit

Still won't have complex, and cleverly placed secrets etc. Procedural generation isn't half as smart as actual people designing content.

And this is an indie game, made by a dev team of less than 10 people, people often seem to forget that.

It's literally just going to be a procedurally generated walking simulator.

You don't really understand how many 18 quintillion is, do you?
It's one billion times one billion times 18.

The average marble is 5/8 of an inch in diameter
The average football field is 160 feet by 360 feet (About 50 meters by 110 meters for you EUs)
1 billion marbles would cover a football field 18 inches deep.
Multiply that by 18 billion and you have the number of planets.

Whether they have any variety is another matter, but just about everything you discover will be a blank slate for you to name

I hate the campy aesthetics.

Though it lacks diversity, alien life and planet landing, Elite: Dangerous is probably a much better experience, and the devs plan on adding all of those things in future expansions.
>>
>>336242456
Dwarf fortress still doesn't have actual level design that i can be in awe about. Everything is just calculated by an algorithm. I can't find joy in exploring something like that.

I really hope procedural generation won't become the next survival game, but it seems that far too many people fall for the "unlimited amounts of """content""" meme.

Every single promised update that the devs have released for ED has been absolutely terrible. See: the fucking catastrophe that was PowerPlay, and we are already in May and the 60 dollar expansion that they released is absolutely worthless other than landing in empty barren planets. I would honestly probably enjoy NMS more than Elite because it focuses on only one thing: exploration, whereas Elite tries to cram as much shit as it can to sound good in concept and then completely fucks up the execution.

You don't understand. What most of us want to do is leave markers showing we were there, we existed. If you don't let people put their mark on a universe more than naming some creatures, there is no reason to do anything on the planets. You can't leave a sky-high monolith saying you were here for other players to find, even if the chances are super remote they'd ever see it.

>>
>>336244832
Multiplayer space games exist already, elite, star citizen. This is a different game. The whole idea is "lone explorer" and how would you achieve that if you have other people flying around everywhere and possibly meeting up and leaving planets half destroyed? Everyone needs to stop complaining about what this game isn't and just appreciate what it is. If you "feel like" it should be something else, go play something else. If it doesn't exist yet, that sucks. No matter what anyone says, NMS is a step forward in space games. It's at least coming out and it's not early access.

OMG guise, this game has LITERALLY MILLIONS of guns!!!

That means that (1) things won't almost immediately get boring an repetitive, (2) the guns totally won't be reskins of the same shit, and (3) the number of guns OBVIOUSLY reflects the quality of gameplay, so there's no way game could turn out to be a mindnumbingly boring pile of trash!!!

Possibly the two biggest negatives a game can have today. The sooner either fad dies out the better. Just excuses to have the player Fuck around aimlessly accomplishing nothing between actual segments of content.

whats the point

Worst game on market.

Is it worth my money, i can draw pretty colour with my new colouring pencils.

Wow, what's this new game? A big procedurally developed universe with tons of planet to visit and explore? Where you have a spaceship that you need to improve and upgrade in order to travel further and eventually reach the centre of the galaxy?

Never heard of that concept before!

Oh wait, yes I have, it's literally Spore's space stage.

You're spending 60 dollars on a reskin of 1/5 of a shitty game.

i assure you, 100% sure, no chance to be wrong that they're going to fuck up procedural generation and everything will be the same boring thing with 3 AIs:
the one that runs away
the one that doesn't give a fuck
the one that attacks you
procedural generation has to be made well to be fun, and they showed absolutely nothing about it. that probably means they made it shit and don't want you to know.

Just don't do that??? It's the fact that I can that makes nms better in that regard. There's nothing "spooky" about seeing a creature thousands of other people already have and that's placed there just for a shitty jumpscare. And don't say they've fucked up procedural generation before the games even out yet and you haven't done your research. I know you won't watch the video but he explains how their system works and dispels the procedural generation is random and creatures will just be recolors meme https://youtu.be/qcS_Odn7JFM

So you didn't watch the video then? Enjoy your early access dlcfest.
>>
>>336254796
Your missing the point. It's my experience that counts yes not the amount of people that have experienced it. But knowing that others haven't yet makes that experience greater. And the amount of different creatures in nms makes it so I can have differnent experiences over a longer amount of time. You could only be scared by the same creatures so many times.

That's exactly what OP's doing, he's intentionally trying to kill any potential discussion of this game by spamming these threads because he got assblasted once.

>>
>>336255778
so what about now?
after i watched that video i don't feel different towards the game.
instead it made me even more scared that lots of people are gonna be let down by the game. you know why?
clumping little things near big things makes for good looking terrain scatter, custom made palettes make for good looking planets. yeah cool. but that only adds to the aesthetic of the game.
i'm not convinced by that at all, because all that makes the game look good, but it in no way guarantees that it's going to PLAY good. and that's the more important thing. if you want to get spooked by sea monsters all that stuff will not help. procedural generetion is not good at that.
to spook you it needs to build some tension, it needs some music suitable for the moment and procedural generation isn't good at that.

>>
>>336240083
Just please take a moment and work through the following thought:

Billions of galaxies each with billions of planets is NO MORE INTERESTING than thousands of galaxies with thousands of planets.

Anything over >1000 in terms of variety is really just useless, and I would even argue anything >100 personally.

You're being tricked. Please think about this.
>>
>>336240083
Yeah except it's all procedurally generated which makes it garbage. You'll never have anything remotely unique or iconic, it'll all be rehashed shit with some different colors and species. Wooptydoo. Boring after the first few hundred planets.

Give me hundreds of real, hand-crafted locations followed by procedural generation to fill in gaps and beyond the populated area. That's how it's used right. There's a game doing that already, including a lot more stuff, and it ain't this one.
>>
>Billions of galaxies each with billions of planets.

So, assuming there are no repeats we are talking about 10^24 different planets? (Which also raises the question how many different planets the engine is able to generate.)
Not hyped considering how the last game like this I invested in early on turned out.
Won't touch it until later (and only if it turns out fine).
