Something I'm learning more and more as I get closer to 30, is that you're never too young to start feeling old. My first console was a hand-me-down Intellevision, which was replaced by a brand spanking new NES in 1990, and now I feel nostalgic looking at my Dreamcast, PS2, Gamecube and Xbox, being flooded with all the feelings I felt when I first saw them all sitting on store shelves and connected to TV screens.
My first PS2 game was actually Mortal Kombat Deception. I was a bit late to the party but I wanted it because I'd never played a fighting game online before. The netplay wasn't perfect, but in the early 2000s that shit blew me away.

Xbox had the best multiplats. That might not sound very significant, but the difference between a multiplat on Xbox and PS2 is pretty huge. I bought one a year ago and I've been replacing most of my PS2 multiplats with the Xbox versions just because they look and play so much better, especially if you're playing on an HDTV. Most Xbox multiplat games run in progressive scan while the PS2 versions don't, and some even run in HD, and in general the graphics are better with higher framerates.
In terms of exclusives, it had lots of great exclusive Sega games that still haven't been ported to other platforms. That's really what sold me on the system because I love classic Sega. Panzer Dragoon Orta, Gun Valkyrie, Jet Set Radio Future, Outrun 3, and Shenmue 2 (even though the Dreamcast version is better) all ended up in my collection very quickly. There are also some lesser known gems in the library like Breakdown and Buffy the Vampire Slayer (I'm not a particularly big fan of the show but the game is a lot of fun).
I never owned an Xbox system before but the Xbox phat managed to win me over, epsecially since I got mine for $30 at a thrift store.

I think the coolest thing about the console is the kind of shit they pulled graphically and otherwise with how low level the development process seems to have been with the thing. They accomplished ICO and SotC on the PS2. What a cool era.

SO3 is much better and smoother just by allowing full 3D combat alone. It just makes more sense. You can't even attack in SO2 unless you're standing right next to an enemy, like you're on a lane like in Tales. There are no proper combos so either you attack an enemy once, then get hit yourself, or you just stunlock the fuck out of it by timing X presses or ganging up on it. And when you're not doing that you're just spamming skills. I don't get it.
Not to mention how much deeper the actual combat mechanics in SO3 go with the whole guard and strong/weak attack mechanics and juggling and shit.

SO1 and 2 did revolutionise RPG combat, and so did SO3 again.
Tekken 5 did bring a focus on juggling, but it's still the best Tekken game we ever got, if only for it not having the shitty Bound and other mechanics that literally hand all the power to the player that first gets the other one into the air.
Ace Combat 4, 5, 0 did introduce story and cutscenes, that you can just skip if you don't want to watch them. But they're phenomenal so nobody does unless you're on your 2nd playthrough in one year.
MGS2, like I said, is a perfect evolution of MGS1 mechanically. I don't see how the difficulty is unbalanced or how 2 became trial and error. The games give you more than enough ways to deal with any situation. You can always scout a place with first-person view, or push against a wall and shit. MGS is the last stealth series you can accuse of being badly-designed.
I'll give you worse bosses for 2 and 3 though.

PS2 had Zero, 04 and 5, and while 5 is cheesy and 04 is overrated by being the most commonly known one, Zero still remains the game with the most soul and effort into it out of all the ace combats, in my opinion. Something the PS1 games don't have. Also

There's no denying that the combat in SO3 is better. It's actually some of my favorite combat in any RPG. But that doesn't save the game because the rest of it is mediocre to bad, not even counting the twist.
The good combat in Star Ocean 3 isn't nearly enough to prop up the rest of the game. Same exact deal with Star Ocean 4. I really hope that Star Ocean 5 turns out good. I like what I've seen of it.

I think that when the point comes where you can't discuss most games for a system on /v/ without it quickly falling off the board is the point at which something should be considered retro HERE.
The Dreamcast is technically in the 6th gen but it's a special case since it came out a couple years before and died early. It can be argued that since the PS2/Xbox/Gamecube still got relevant support until about 2006, that they shouldn't be allowed for a couple more years still.
