They did though. Kessler got his powers through a ray sphere, but wasent strong enough to beat the beast. So he went back in time to develope the ray sphere years before the one that gave him his powers would be developed to give cole more time to train. Unfortinatly the ray sphere is what created the beast so there was no getting a jump on it.

Kessler also thought that he had a lot more time, whereas his using the Raysphere also created the Beast much sooner. Kessler did everything he could to protect his family in his own world, even as the world burned. He had been completely selfish, so he went back in time to ensure that his younger self would be selfless. Cole had shit tough, but at the last minute it's revealed that Kessler had an even shittier life. All he ever wanted was a happy life with his waifu.

Not just having similar abilities and what not but actually plays like a player. As in they actively avoid dying, use cover, explosives, specials, block attacks, blind fire, ect.
Like the usual cover shooter Final Bosses are all horrible Division styled "bosses" that just tank shit.

He knew himself, he knew he would have to do this because any other way wouldn't work, the Ray Sphere itself needs a lot of casualties to absorb all the power and give it to the one who activated it anyhow, forcing his past self to do all of these sacrifices is what matured and toughened him up, the betrayal of his best friend, his once beloved dying even when he was selfish enough to choose her over others.
Kessler did nothing wrong, because he saved the world anon. Killing his beloved from the past, making a spoiled brat with super'powers into the streets and making one individuals life hell is nothing compared to it.
