The mountains fit, and the undead asylum is supposed to be somewhere near Firelink Shrine, and Firelink Shrine is supposed to be near Anor Londo, and you can see Archdragon Peak from Anor Londo. Of course, the architecture is very similiar but the place itself has been built up over the years.

Gwyn knew about the Undead Asylum, so it's safe to assume that Nameless and Ornstein did as well, and since the Chosen Undead was basically "reborn" at that place. The reason they decided to make a fortress there was because of symbolism, and it would be easy to defend, so high up in the mountains.
