But you have to change mechanics a little so that people who used to play quake and UT way too much won't be able to dominate and will have to learn again/give some room for newer generation of players.

I think clan/rocket arena types will make genre more appealing since you don't have to think about items and it's round based so they end very quickly. For this, i think new unreal tournament will be a nice head up since it'll be more easy to advertise UT with cool graphics and skill showing frags etc for new comers.

The issue with UT is that it's stuck in alpha and when people see untextured maps and shitty animations they just drop it.
Another issue is that UT veterans dominate the game and noobs leave after realising that most people were playing UT for 10+ years and it's really difficult to get gud (or at least decent or average) without spending autistic amount of time on it, and not that many people are that patient to play 24/7 and have 5000k hours of play time.

yea, you are right there but i'm wanted to talk about future of it. today it is true that people are getting bashed. But again people only play duel, dm and ctf mostly. In those game types i mentioned they are fun and not too much skill depending. Instantly rewards or punished just like other single player shooter games. I don't know maybe i just want to look from the bright side.

Does TF2 do anything special to help new players git gud?
TF2 is one of the last arena-like shooters and it has a shitload of people online who are actually playing the game. It manages to make new fans despite the fact that the genre is pretty much dead at this point. I'm wondering if it helps new players adjust more than other games do.
UT4 already has a tutorial. But, I wonder if having a community run server would help. A server where you can just fuck around with different weapons, and a wide range of terrain to test out movement options.

Movement in unreal is like moving through sludge. The dodge button is literally an escape sludge button, but then you land right back in the sludge.

Do you even watch Quakecon or are you just spewing shit? GLs are used quite frequently unless they are just bad. PG isn't as widely used, but they are used when available if a RL or RG isn't available which are the two primarily used weapons.

This. They need much clearer segregation between ability levels and a way more gentle transitioning curve.

The last popular arena shooter was TF2 and only because it had "funny" characters, "funny" cinematics, hat trading, etc. that made people feel invested in it. If you stripped the game of all of that so it was basically just gameplay, like most arena shooters, it would have died extremely quickly.

It's a game for fans of the UT and it's too late for people like me to get into it. Trying to catch up with people who are good is painful especially when you don't even know how to use certain weapons at all, don't know respawn timers and don't even understand basics of movement.
I don't really want to spend thousands of hours to be able to call myself 'decent but still scrub' and force myself to play it and practice even when i don't want to.

I'd rather wait for something completely new.

There are loads of new players when I play. The beginner lobbies are perfect for you, just try to memorize the shield belt and armour locations + times and you will survive more than the average player at least.

If you have general FPS expertise you can typically hit the ground running on any new shooter that comes out. Of course, every game has its own specific intricacies but I don't think previous UT expertise makes that much of a difference. I was decent at UT2004 but couldn't play UT3 for shit when it came out

If you're not enjoying it period, just go play something else. If you're new to FPS in general, maybe hold off on this kind of game for a while. You'll eventually notice there was nothing special about arena FPS preventing you from doing well

TF2 uses source, which is a modified Unreal, not a modified Quake (like Goldsrc was)

Sauerbraten, Xonotic, OpenArena, QuakeLive, Red Eclipse, etc are all free and do not have a particularly big audience.
UNless they change a lot about the formula and make it more satisfying to play I don't see them making a comeback.
UT4 is a ton of fun and I have a lot of hope for that game but I'm not sure how many people will be playing it for a long time.
Also you can't put Arena FPS on console so nobody will want to make these games.

UT has always been slower paced than Quake and Halo and and one of the biggest Q3 Vs UT fanboy arguments was that UT had a much longer TTK rate because it was slower. People just never noticed it till now when most of the arena DM games on the market are as fast paced as Q3.

If they are too fast you have to make rockets op because its almost impossible to hit somone with them, especially if they can change direction midair.
Also any kind of gun with spread is automaticly shit.

Quake is fun and all, but the weapon variety is pretty bad. There are only 3 relevant guns, the lightning gun, RL, and rail. There's no reason to use anything else if you have at least two of those

In UT, every gun has some interesting niche role. The link gun is good for fast retreats, and fast pursuits. But it isn't a good combat weapon. So it has a niche role, like the bio rifle too.

In quake, the shotgun, machine gun, heavy machine gun, and plasma rifle are all irrelevant. You would only ever use them if you didn't have the 3 i mentioned previously

The rockets in UT are obnoxiously slow, but they are one hit kills. This is bad, because they are easy to avoid and stay away from, but you cannot be aggressive against them. We can see right now that hitscan guns are way too strong, not because the RL and flak do too little damage, but because they aren't usable. The other player can run away and do hitscan damage.

UT has always been slower than Quake, but it has lots of advanced movement options to get you across distances quickly. Or well, at least UT2004 did.
