Such an odd look for the characters. While I can sort of dig the realistic fur on Ratchet, Sly feels like they should have gone with something like the Cel-shading seen in things like Ironman Adventures, just better.

I might sneak out to see it tomorrow. I say sneak because I don't want to endure the looks my friends and family will give me when I say I want to see this movie with the reviews it's gotten. Not when Jungle Book and Zootopia are still playing. They would humor me with a movie as big as Batman V Superman but not some low-budget video game adaptation that's had barely any marketing. And I'll probably be the only one in the theater, so if it's shit no-one can whine to me about it (and on the flipside, I'll have no-one to whine to).
What really strikes me as odd is that Sony pretty much disowned this movie before it was even finished. They distributed it through another company and it was made on a shoestring budget, at least by Hollywood standards.
If I see this in theaters I'm going in with really low expectations. I want to like it but I haven't been hearing good things about it. I'm curious though, as to what kind of expectations Sony is going to hold it to. Is the game making enough profit to offset the costs of distribution of the movie, or is the movie going to be such a big flop that it's losing Sony more money than the game is making? What was Sony's hypothetical expected measure of success when they greenlit the idea of doing this collaboration of making a movie and a game at the same time, and what does the poor critical reception of the movie mean for the future adaptations of Playstation games? Is the Sly Cooper movie dead, or are they going to give this idea another chance, possibly with closer supervision and potential involvement from Sony Animation Studios?

Cel shaded movies don't sell (no pun intended). A lot of audiences have complained about getting headaches from movies that use that look, and in general they are a lot more comfortable with more "realistic" looking movies.
They could always go the Kung Fu Panda route though, and have bits of the movie where everything goes cel shaded in specific moments and and even straight up 2D. It would be very fitting for Sly Cooper since the games have lots of cutaways where Sly explains a character's backstory.
