it's a shame the hard shadow style never took off
technology has progressed to the point where you can now easily have that kind of lighting in settings other than tight, enclosed indoor environments like riddick or doom 3 or penumbra, but the style has largely been abandoned.

Hard shadows was not a "style", it was a technical limitation because soft shadows were computationally expensive.

I've played my games on a 85 Hz screen in the late 90's.
There were mostly no FPS caps on PC just like there are none now (except for trash ports of course).
It's funny it got actually lower on average because shitty flatscreen panels coudn't keep up and the 60 FPS meme was born.

What's funny is all the people that complained that the 60Hz monitor is unbearable but the 60Hz TV or the 60Hz light globe never seemed to bother them. I put these people in the same category as those that think they can "feel" wifi.

the technology got so good, devs could aim for realism

then gamers/devs got bored of realism and moved into the "hyper real", which is why everything is stylized and vibrantly colorful right now

the trends change every few years, but i agree with you. todays games are too stylized to the point where it hurts immersion..

it could also be that with the amount of casuals entering the market, they wanted visual styles to be "non threatening" .. look at the new DOOD art style..

Goddamn, this makes the detail in modern games look flat and lifeless. Those textures pop out so well. The layers and depth gives me a fuckin' eye-boner.

Outcast is from 1999, and I've never actually played it, but the graphics look so nice to me for some reason, especially the water.
