Matches are on a counter. 25 minutes IIRC. The map is sizable, but you can't modify it, so not a sandbox in the strictest of sense.
You have to loot weapons and tools, and kill other players in that limited time. Once the timer reaches a certain point, the map starts getting smaller, by way of poison gas clouds. All the way until it's just the small central arena, and usually only a few survivors. Last one standing (or last team standing) wins.

My computer was running MGSV at 60fps on ultra but the culling is like 15fps on all low settings

It is not any of those things.
It's a battle royale game and it's actually pretty good.
This has some of the worst, jankiest combat and animations I've ever seen.
Also the crafting system makes no sense and is pretty limited.

This, melee combat is shit now, they've been fucking up with the patches and the last one ruined it. It's not even worth it to fight people now and trials is full pussy mode with everyone avoiding combat.
