Mods have been faggots lately. I have a 27" Panasonic CRT tv I got a few years ago that I player older consoles on, it's got component, composite, and s-video.

I'll even play my ps3 on it sometimes.

Whenever I get a proper job and save up some money I want to try and find a non-HD widescreen CRT.

>>
>>336023170
It is was a bigger jump from quality than I was expecting from just using composite before, colors and text look a lot better. I also forgot to mention I got it for free from a local pawn shop because they just wanted to get rid of the thing for space.

Aside from a widescreen 480I CRT It would be nice to find an HD CRT tv that doesn't have HDMI or any post processing of the image, a few of them do exist I just can't remember the models. Being able to get a non digitally post processed and input lag free 1080i through component would make it great for ps3, 360, ps4, and watching bluray rips on.

They have better contrast and colors than any other display technology, but in most cases are limited to 480i resolution, the other huge benefit for gaming is that they have practically zero input latency which is great for games that require precision and timing. This is why there are still some fighting game tournaments where they use CRT's instead of LCD's.

Not him, but I think 10-15ms is the lowest you can get in LCD monitors, and having that on top of 120hz makes it nearly CRT levels of input lag and the perception of lag.

I'm not talking about Response Time, that measure is pure bullshit, it measures the time it takes a pixel to change color, not the time it takes for the screen to show a change when an input is pressed
>>

The only reason to have a CRT is to play older games with non-shit picture. There are upscalers that get a good picture on modern displays but those cost an upwards of $300. A good modern LCD will have minimal input lag on a digital source. The lag and awful color arises when you try to use a analogue source on one of these displays, you're stuck with the cheap shitty upscaler built into your display.
>>
>>336025857

I really don't even get what you are getting at there.

Response times aside - IPS cant do fucking blacks at all.

Why do you guys use LCDs? CRTs outperform LCDs in every comparison, For example:

CRTs Can do unlimited resolutions, while LCDs Have extremely limited(sometimes even going as low as 800 x 600 as it's max!)

CRTs have response times the speed of light, which means no ghosting, or getting used to it while trying to play games!

CRTs have true color and good contrast ratios. While LCDs have extremely limited color and poor contrast ratios, if you look at the black on an LCD and then on a CRT, there is no comparison, CRT wins.

CRTs are more durable, if you drop one, The monitor lives on. Whilst if you drop an LCD, it's completely ruined.

CRTs don't have input lag.

CRTs do correct upscaling

CRTs don't get deadpixels and unfixable driver IC issues. whereas most LCDs you buy within the first year will have a dead pixel, if not already having one out of the box.

CRTs come in widescreen: http://www.google.com/#hl=en&source=hp&q=widescreen+crt&aq=f&aqi=g10&aql=&oq
=&gs_rfai=CdsWImWx3TJy0GJXggwTji5TPDwAAAKoEBU_QDx_y&fp=9c2c65350d4186d5

True that CRTs consume more power, but it's well worth the extra ~$0.50 a month to use them.

The only reason CRTs are no longer sold by companies is because it is no longer profitable to sell them, due to the uninformed public only buying LCDs thinking they're better in every way.

CRTs have better text(xp, vista, and 7 come with a feature to make text more legible on LCDs)

sure, LCDs get the job done, but why would you want to use them? They're the PC of the monitor world, Shitty build quality, Fragile, and Don't do the job as well as their counterparts.

why do you guys pay so much for an LCD? it makes so much more sense to want a CRT.

Do people argue this much about something as simple as old TVs? Obviously newer sets have advantages over CRTs, especially in terms of not weighing so much and being easier to transport. But pre-HD consoles look fantastic on them.

I used my grandfather's Trinitron from '94 from time to time. Played THUG, Yakuza 1, Haunting Ground, and Silent Hill 2 along with some PS1 and Gamecube titles on it not too long ago. Looked great and was super nostalgic. I see Trinitron FDs being thrown away all the time, I'd take em home if they weren't so fucking heavy.

It is though. Anything at HD resolution, use an HDTV tv. Lower resolution stuff, like 6th Gen and below, CRTs are a better bet. I'd say the only not simple thing is the whole rabbit hole of RGB setups and scanline adjustment and what have you. But that's mainly for enthusiasts. For the average person, the best thing is having an HD set-up along with a CRT with your old consoles in your basement or something. Not everyone has the luxury of space, so emulation and ports are another option for older games.

Personally I miss seeing old tech in movies these days. I loved jurassic park because it was so cozy and nostalgic

I certainly didn't like jurassic world where everyone had super duper samsung "smart watches" for all the normies to relate to

It's why I absolutely loved alien isolation, because they had the balls to stick with the setting that the first Alien movie introduced and made it retrofuturistic. I absolutely applaud them for that

call me an autist but I'm just a tech enthusiast

>>
>>336032550
he's probably referring to snow, instead of plain black. That mix of slightly blueish (CRT) ever-shifting grey with a complete lack of form or structure, that you just can't get a visual hold on. You could say it's hard to describe, which is why Gibson used that tech-related simile to begin with. Everyone knew exactly what it looked like, and got the right idea, even if it's hard to describe in cold hard technical terms.

Higher picture quality than composite or S-video. The picture quality of component is nearly identical to RGB, save for some luminance differences (which can be adjusted out anyway). So it's a poor man's alternative to RGB, especially if you can get a SCART to YPbPr converter.
