I started playing Grandia for the first time like 20 mins ago.
It's pretty cool.
I don't really understand how the combat works, but it's pretty cool that you can see what commands enemies have input and who their target is. I guess the idea is to either use combo or defend until you see who the enemy is targeting, have that character evade, and have their allies attack whatever is attacking them? What is critical even for though? Seems like it does the same damage as 2 hits of combo and it gets you less weapon experience. Does it slow down the enemy turn order or something? I imagine you have one person start a combo to stop an enemy in their tracks and have another person critical in the meantime to get some special effect out of it?

JRPGs tend to be fun when they're action based ones like Ys, Mana series, DaS, etc.
On the other hand, most WRPGs with such combat are garbage to the point the good ones are full TBS or at least offer a temporaly option to pause between movements.
