what did he mean by this?
That it's better to reign in hell, than serve in heaven.

Don't see why not. Reading in general is pretty good.

I read all the timewell actually I listen to audiobooks, so were looking for a recommendation to when I'm finished with the Malazan books.
>>336007697
Yes. Milton and Shakespeare were the two greatest British writers.

>>336008315I haven't read a book in years. I read a lot of shit on the internet, but I don't do any leisurely reading.
>>336008348

Are you literally retarded
>>336008380
I can recommend audiobooks. I listen to them on car rides, walks, even during fitness. It's really nice and gives you a good excuse to get a bit of exercise.
>>336008507
I second this, but don't try audiobooks at home. Shit doesn't work when you do literally anything else but listen.

fuck off
>>336008387
If I browse /v/, it must be so.
>>336008315
I'd recommend "Legend of the Galactic Heroes".
Japanese space opera from the 70s. Recently got released in English.
>>336008380
Same. I feel like my reading quota is all filled up by useless internet shit 85% of the time so I'm over reading when it comes time to enrich myself.
>>336008667
Yeah that's true. I can't just sit and do audiobooks. Need to be doing something while.
>>336008728

>>336011897

I have a hard time believing people honestly pick endings that aren't becoming a technological god.
>>336012275
>implying that a new dark age would be more violent than the current geopolitical situation

It's been drawn, I don't have it on this laptop tho
>>336008315Audiobooks? What kind of a reasonable human being would use two idle sensory organs to consume media? Why would you not want to make your eyes sore from trying to decipher small letters? Why would you leave any room for multitasking? Why would you not want to waste time just reading and being able to do nothing else at the same time? Lack of convenience and artificial difficulty for the win. Git gud and read books. Bedtime stories are for kids. Reading is for us pretentious judgemental cunts. And you know how much you want to be one too.
>>336007697
>>336008315
Yes. If you can handle the Malazan books, you can understand Paradise Lost.

how the fuck do i get into milton?
the language is too old-fashioned I can hardly keep up, any tipps, maybe something to read first in english to ease it up on me?english is my third language
>>336014652
Milton is very tough. Not only is his language archaic to modern readers, but his heavy use of Latin grammatical constructions makes him very difficult to read. I'm an English lit major and even I had trouble reading him last semester. Instead, I would try reading Shakespeare or Spenser first.
>>336014872
alright gonna try that, the last thing i've read was victorian-era books like robert-louis-stevenson and stoker, and it was managable but barely
>>336012510
>implying there isn't a deadly disease spreading on at least two continents that can't be solved if the internet goes kaboom
>implying the world isn't on the verge of apocalypse anyway that will not be solved by burying your head in the sand
>implying the current geopolitical situation is actually that bad aside from MJ-12 schenanigans
>>336015017
Well, if English is your third language, you've got to know your limits. The further back you go in the canon, the more difficult it is going to be. Shakespeare is the starting point for getting into Renaissance English lit, but if you have an edition with lots of footnotes and are willing to take your time, you can get through it
>>336008332
I'm a retard and don't understand Shakespearean English but I want to read Hamlet. Should I just try and bear through it even if I don't understand most if it or just give up now and resign myself to a fate of pleb stupidity?
>>336015224
true that, but all those nice stories keep me going
so the editions i've mostly read were ''wordsworth classics'' but I've heard the ''oxford university press'' has better footnotes and remarks, but it's a bit more expensive here. Do you have a good recommendation, thanks in advance?that's the only two edition I can order here, everything else always becomes to expensive
>>336014097
>>336012901
There's another one I've seen
Let me break down the Tong ending briefly.
Tyrants always have the power to organize. Before global communications, they had radio, before that phones, before that telegraph, mounted couriers, and fucking smoke signals. The only really good thing about global communications is that because they are accessible, they give the underclasses a chance to organize on their own and fight back. Bringing the network down accomplishes only one thing - the poor go back to having no ability to defend themselves from rich assholes. Tong ending brings on the society understandable to the average citizen because being forced to farm rice for a rich guy and his armed thugs is easy to understand.
>>336015753
If those are your best options, go with Oxford University Press. Wordsworth is known mostly for having terrible cover art. Penguin classics are good too IMHO, but like you said, if your options are limited, go with Oxford
>>336015268
You can do it m8, it just takes a little bit of effort. Read an edition like pic related, that has notes on the page facing the text. Makes it really easy. Folger is probably better, but Signet is cheaper and easy to find
