Personally its my favourite in the whole series including 3 and 3 was a massive letdown for me.

DS2 is irrelevant plot-wise to the rest of series. To understand 3 you need to play in 1 but you can completely skip 2 and won't miss anything aside from a few item descriptions.

Both 1 and 3 you had NPC's in personal quests, doing this and that, needing your help with something or other something. The dialogue sure helped some of them to keep us more engaged, Onion is a good example. 2 had it, but it was so few of them and it wasn't really well done, just okay at best.

Guess why Solaire and Sigmeiyer fucking became popular? Because they are memorable, lovable characters. People shitpost about le praise le sun as if it was an out of place reddit meme, but Solaire fits the purpose of Dark Souls better than anyone else. The friendliest, most helpful face you ever meet, following alongside you for your entire journey, goes hollow and tries to kill you while babbling like a madman and you have to put him down.
Same with Siggy, only he does it right in front of his daughter. I'd also like to point out that Sigmeiyer's armor design is genuinely very good, it serves its purpose in looking like silly onion armor but it would also actually be very good protection.
Dark Souls II has no "meme characters" because almost none of the fucking NPCs were even vaguely memorable. When the highlights of your characters are such legends as Laddersmith GIllian, Smug Black Armor Merchant, Bear Seek Seek Lest, and FEEBLE CURSED ONE, you have failed utterly.
