But more seriously, can anyone here explain what's the logic behind putting such high placeholder prices up there for new consoles? The PlayStation 4 and XBOX One did the same thing between their unveiling and the actual pricing reveal.

because if people pay 999 for a placeholder and the price goes down to 600 or whatever then they get their money back and it's no big deal for either party.
If they put a $300 placeholder and it jumps up to 450 or 500, most of the time the company taking preorders can't raise the price and have to honor the fully paid preorder.
