Not obsidians' fault. Remember the publishers cut almost 1 1/2 years off the contracted dev time because 'must release for xmas!' And they got away with it cos obs' was already a month or so behind.

If you really don't care, you can read a good plot summary of KOTOR 1 and be fine for 2.
I'd recommend finishing KOTOR just to have that full perspective on it.
