Can't believe that the first 3D Mario was also the best one.

It was damn good, I'll give you that.

But the best? Nah nigga.

Galaxy is the best, and even it isn't the best 3D platformer

lmao

Galaxy 2 is literally the greatest platformer ever
>>
Super Mario 64.. What a gem.

How classic.

Perfect controls for the controller.

If it had dual analog stick capabilities and you could move camera that way, it'd be perfect.
>>
but first
>>
Second or 3rd best maybe, Galaxy 2 is easily the best by far.
>>
I prefer Sunshine. I used to really dislike the water controls, but I've come to really enjoy them and how most levels are designed creatively around their use.
>>
no, the more recent ones are better.

Havent played enough of them to really know, but the 3ds one was excellent.

64 just doesnt have enough levels, and mario controls a touch too floaty for the camera.

Sadly I can't really deny it
Sunshine was half coin collecting and rehashes and the Galaxy games were a bit linear and not as challenging or as free to approach as 64.
Too bad the only remake we've had was so fucking shitty.

WE NEED TO CLEAR SOMETHING UP
>>
>>335939662
For a series that encouraged exploration like the previous games, linearity is certainly a negative aspect
>>
it's also the best 3d platformer. every other 3d platformer took the wrong lessons from it
>>
Galaxy and Galaxy 2 are both much better.
>>
>>335939908
Not when the level design is significantly tighter and more fun to go through.
>>
>>335939662
If i wanted to play a linear mario game, I would play a 2d mario game
>>
I want another Mario platformer like 64. One that doesn't have any weird gimmicks (think the shadow-mario levels in Sunshine)
>>
>>335940102
You mean the best Mario games?
>>
>>335940095
Significantly tighter because you're generally confined to small planets and paths rather than open spaces
>>
>>335940283
no, mario 64 is the best. but yeah, compared to the galaxy games, much better
>>
>>335939908
>>335940102

That's completely wrong though. Just because a series started becoming more linear isn't a bad thing. It just means it's changed. You're literally arguing that because it is different it is inherently worse. What it was at first has no relevance to the quality of a later entry. It's the same horribly flawed argument as
>X game isn't a real X game
>>
>>335940404
it different and worse

smb3 and world are more open than galaxy games
>>
>>335940290
Which allows for more cohesive and well-put together level designs.

There's a reason why the Throwback Galaxy was the worst galaxy in Galaxy 2.
>>
>>335940548
Open doesn't equate to better, that's the point
>>
>>335940671
yes it does

that's one of the criteria when making a 3d platformer
>>
3D Mario is boring.
>>
>>335940671
In this case it does.
It's a series about exploration when you limit that you effectively kill the game.
Mario 3D World on the otherhand was completely focused on linear get to the goal gameplay similar to Galaxy the difference was it's normally one and done then you move on while in Galaxy you have to take the same path until you get branch and are forced to take that.
Hell even 3D world had green stars and stamps to encourage you to search around.
>>
>>335938625
>that movement
nope!
>>
Same with Zelda.
>>
>>335940824
>that's one of the criteria when making a 3d platformer
>There are people who actually believe this

>>335940947
>It's a series about exploration
First of all no it isn't. It's a series about 3D platforming as a Mario character in the Mario universe. You yourself proved this when you said Galaxy was linear, therefore the series isn't about being open.
Secondly, exploration doesn't even go away in a linear setting, this meme needs to end
>>
It's odd, I thought 3DW was kinda meh but I have this weird desire to replay it

Galaxy is my favorite though, followed closely by Sunshine

Galaxy 2 is only one step forward and two steps back from Galaxy 1.
>>
>>335941752
I'd call it several steps backwards. Most companies would have sold it as level pack DLC. Probably the first case of neo-Nintendo shining through.

>>335940947
You have a very good point but the branch in each Galaxy was usually very early on in the stage, and even if it wasn't, the bits you had to repeat were changed up in an interesting way.
But it is certainly not a criteria, that a 3D platformer must always be open. That's totally false.
>>
>>335941752
It really wasn't.
The hub was made much more easier to navigate. It made for much more efficient play.
And oh please, Rosalina's lore is never going to be further explained, that is of no relevance to how good or bad G2 is.
>Implying 2D sections are bad and don't add variety
>>
Do you think they'll make another Super Mario game as wacky and as inspired as 64? I mean, Galaxy was okay, and Galaxy 2 was even better, but I miss doing stupidly eccentric stuff in Super Mario.

>>335948232
did someone port all of the mario 64 levels to banjo?
>>
>>335948063
I feel they will definitely go super eccentric on NX. They seem to be doing a fair bit o off the wall stuff lately, with other franchises, so I can see it happening. I want Sunshine 2. Sure, that isn't "wacky" like 64, but it is odd in retrospect that there is a Mario game which literally only takes place in beach levels. And I love that. Sunshine 2 could so easily add more variety to the beach theme, while maintaining a relaxing or visually appealing atmosphere and look.
Like
>a new sub Island that is constantly stormy, and includes a rain forest.
>There is a traversable sewage system in Sunshine 1. In 2, this could still be a thing, but there could be a secret underground that leads to an "underground" themed world, which is like a nightclub, with a lot of glow in the dark, retro-Mario signs on the walls, with many classic Mario segments. That would be rad.
>Adding caves to the already existing worlds like Noki Bay or Gelato Beach. Within each would be a different theme, e.g, a tropical cave, akin to ones found at real life beaches, or ice caves, or firey caves, etc.
-Perhaps each world would have one stage involving a severe whether change. Imagine a frozen Bianco Hills where the windmills stop spinning due to being frozen, and you have to do some sort of puzzle on the now frozen lake, perhaps you'd need to unfreeze the Big Windmill's Blades as part of a puzzle. The possibilities are endless when you involve whether.
Most of the game would still have a very chill atmosphere with constant sunshine though.
I was also thinking it'd be cool if, once you beat the game, perhaps 100%, the beach hut at Gelato Beach gets upgraded, and Nintendo characters make guest appearances, similar to what was planned to happen in Mario and Luigi Super Star Saga. Before completing the game, Nintendo chaarcters can still be encountered at the beach hut by scanning in Amiibo. All they'd do is sit at the bar, and would have unique and probably funny (not meme tier) dialogue
>>
>>335948615
It is a thing. You can play in Mumbo's Mountain as Mario, and in the Bob-omb field as Banjo; but that's about it.
