I just assumed they reduced its effectiveness and wasted my entire first run of the game pumping 50 points into Equip load, 40 into STR, and trying to run full Havels + Dragon Tooth + Havels GreatShield only to find out that even with Ring of Favour and Havels Ring, 50 isn't enough to run the entire Havel set, and basic bitch enemies in the first area can still knock you out of every animation.
Luckily you can respec. I never would have beaten King of Storms if I didn't switch to a gimmicky Ninja build instead of wasting 50% of my levels on a stat that almost did nothing at all outside of a minuscule increase in damage reduction

some weapons don't gain scaling from heavy, mostly if they are already a B or an A. so an infusion will just reduce the base damage. but I don't know what that guy means by it only being good at low SL, since he mentioned hollow infusion I guess luck scaling is better than other forms of scaling so if you're high SL with good luck you do more damage with hollow infusion.

That said, Raw is golden for the early game. I'm two-handing a +2 Greataxe for invasions, and it's at 266 AR. The R1 is guaranteed two hits, and people are trying to poke me to death with their toothpicks. It's fantastic.

AR isn't everything. Split damage generally gets you less than you see, especially when one portion is particularly low due to the way defense works. Pyro buff on minimum stats but a maxed flame is barely better than resin, other than lasting longer. Stuff like blessed weapon, warcry, sacred oath, etc have deceptively good returns on high-damage weapons because it's adding pure physical damage and the damage calculations rewards the gap between offense and defense.
And this is coming from someone who played the game purely with split damage weapons.

That's what makes it split. You've got the big physical component you had before, and now a small fire component tacked on. Both get run through their own separate attack calculations, and small values have harsher penalties applied. So it's always extra damage, but not necessarily what the AR would imply.

I think I was around 90 for that. Buffs out the ass though. Not really worthwhile. My standard no-buff AR without dicking around was 679. Meanwhile a chaos Dark Sword was 530.

Depends on your stats and weapon really. As a pyro with 40/40 int/fth, chaos infusion gave higher damage than I could get with my low str/dex + spell buff. Running that greatsword at 679 AR, it probably did comparable damage to my recent strength build at 45 str using yhorm's great machete. In terms of raw stats, it's not really paying off in extra damage. However, since they were stats I was going to have anyway, the infusion let me equip a heavy-hitting weapon I otherwise wouldn't be able to use.
Also should be noted that most B/B scalings are equal or greater in value than a single S at softcaps. This is why refined ultimately does more damage than heavy/sharp. 40/40 is more of an investment than 40/10. Astora's A/A for chaos/dark is abnormally high, and even then I was only competing with heavy/reined ultra weapon damage. So basically, infusions are there to shift weapons to better fit your playstyle, not to strictly dominate in damage.
