Can you guys suggest me some good ways to play doom nowdays?

Can you guys suggest me some good ways to play doom nowdays? I tried brutal doom but i didn't like it, too fast and weird for me.

Just use gzdoom.
Keep in mind that vanilla moves at about the same pace as BD, the only differences are in the visual/aural department. Also some new weapons and enemy attacks but other than that the game is fundamentally the same.

if you want a more vanilla experience, Chocolate Doom is better choice than GZDoom, since it does not include eye-cancer filters, jumping, etc.

Well if you want the best graphics then definitely try to get doomsday working, there is nothing really that compares to that.

Other that that, there is smooth doom.

That means as original as possible, with increased render resolution at tops, I hope.

You can disable all of those. IIRC, when loading up classic Doom .wad files (doom2, plutonia, etc), it disables them by default. Don't quote me on that though.
It's nice to also have other options like higher internal res, fullscreen hud, vertical aim, crosshairs, disabling auto-aim, lighting effects, tweaking game mechanics, etc.

Filters just hurt the art.
Bloom and blur are literal cancer.

just remember to disable jumping, Y-axis aiming, crosshair and filters. Also enable the Classic style map, and Font scaling on high resolutions.

Why am I incapable of playing Doom with my friend? We can play custom wads and all that, but whenever I just want to co-op plain old Doom something fucks up. I usually get this error:

and sometimes when we DO manage to play we can't even beat the first level because the game crashes on map change.

Zdoom is not the best for anything other than modding, people just use it because... well i dont know because it just gets recommended. Not that it is bad or anything...

Just make sure you disable jumping and y-axis looking, because it stretches the vertical textures and makes it look really confusing. Thats why i like doomsday the most, it has real 3dimensional verticality and you can customize the renderer really easily, even features like SSAO, sky colour effecting outside areas, reflective surfaces...

Brutal Doom really isn't all that good.

If you just want to play vanilla doom with mouse controls the best/easiest option is probably the port in Doom 3 BFG. It actually upscales the resolution without any weirdness, something that takes a bit of effort in zdoom. Otherwise it's literally just vanilla doom and doom2.

GZDoom

Extract all of the files into the base folder of the steam version

Rename GZDoom.exe to dosbox.exe and replace the original exe

It actually works, not sure if it works for DOOM II though.
