For any of the player driven economy or politics and shit to work, you need quite a few players, right? And for any of it not to just be a self-sustaining bore, you need outside influences and reason to want power, right? And you need even MORE players to have a strong enough outside faction to pose a threat to your village economically, politically or in a militaristic way.
So is this game just lots of people scattered around with shacks and then one hub of a few buildings for the admins/richfags or what's the deal?

At this stage the game is mostly just building up and building up skills, there's a few good settlements popping up and everyone is training their skills so they can pvp and conquer each other. There are no empires of 200 v 200 people and stuff like that and there probably wont be for a good while, but the game is still fun as fuck.
If you don't enjoy the small scale stuff, and need things to always be on an epic scale, then Wurm is not that.

Yes, and we're playing on faster skillgain and timer rates. There's still a grind but MUCH more bearable than regular wurm online.

This server is 3x, meaning it will go three times faster than that, but might still take you a little time. You will spawn at different places depending on what you choose and yes, but little handholding after that.
You can join an established village if you want and probably should, just by talking on the global kingdom chat and asking for an invite, but you can also go off on your own and make your own place. Right now /v/ is playing on Mol Rehan, so if you join just choose that kingdom and then ask for an invite if you want to join us.
