Gameplay is slow and clumsy. Loot system is annoying. Getting knocked down over the slightest hit and then getting axed while down is idiotic. Graphics are shit (DF said action mode runs at 600p). Camera system is ass. Stamina meter is fucking stupid. Leveling up stats has no place in a TN game. Mechanics are poorly (or rather not even at all) explained.

Game was an extremely mediocre disappointment. Tried way too hard to ride the Souls wave of success rather than doing its own thing.

Here's all the things Nioh ripped directly from Souls:

The game is slow and clunky and looks bad, and they really shouldn't start you off with armor that can't protect you from any hits at all that's just poor design that will turn off users immediately, but the damage enemies do isn't really the problem.

The problem is that they're trying to merge two genres and design philosophies that are totally at odds with one another.

High damage and a stamina bar and relatively slow attack animations all fit together to make a slow and deliberate game where positioning and patience is key. This is the Souls game design.

Flashy combos and cancel mechanics and expandable combo trees work in fast-paced twitch-action games where everything flows or cancels into everything and the action is hectic. This is the NG game design.

The two are oil and water, mixing them was never going to turn out well. Even if they fix the animations so it doesn't look so stilted and strange every time you ki burst.

I also don't know why people think Team Ninja has a good track record. NG and NG:B were amazing but I can't think of a single good game they've ever made besides it.

In b4 people say DoA is a good series or that Sigma was good.

First of all, no, I don't want to play more Souls games. 2 was mediocre and 3 is full of problems and I'm burnt out on them besides, which is probably why I liked Bloodborne so much more than DaS3.

Second, the reason no one is enjoying Nioh is the same reason no one bought Lords of the Fallen: It's a pale imitation that invites comparison with much more polished games.

Souls games actually flow quite impressively, you'd be hard-pressed to call them stilted or clunky. Nioh, on the other hand, tends to have long recovery frames on moves where your character isn't moving or animating and long gaps in motion even if you ki burst or low-stance-dodge as soon as you can.

Ki Burst really needed an explanation as it is so integral. Attack animations feel too slow and take too long to recover. On the whole it feels stilted; like it can't decide if it wants to be slow and deliberate or quick and twitchy so it settles on neither.

While everything was very detailed the world was also cluttered. There was nothing to focus on so nothing made an impression, I was walking through what may as well have been a featureless hall to fight the next group.

The levels are relatively short. Once you get the combat down you barely die anymore and a level takes maybe 30 minutes to an hour. There are over 10 areas on the map we see in-game. Assuming each is a similarly sized area taking roughly the same amount of time, that's a good game length for an action RPG.

Your success or failure rests HEAVILY on your skill and understanding of the game's numerous systems.

The issues the game has is that it is unpolished. Key things like KI Pulse are not explained. Ki needs a blatant THIS GOVERNS YOUR STAMINA indicator rather than what is currently in the game.

The ability to customize how your combo strings begin and end.

One of my favorite things was discovering how to MURDER those fucking ninjas.

Low Stance Katana: 2 Light attacks+ Heaven's Flash to knock them down
Stance switch to High Stance Heavy move to stab grounded targets.

And it looks so fucking smooth, too.

Demons fucking suck, though. Almost all the depth in human combat is replaced with:

Dodge Attack, Ki Pulse, Hammer them with attacks until you kill their stamina. Most weapon skills don't work on them, so all the cool technical shit goes out the window.

Yes and no. The first incarnation of the game started development in 2004, and was a weird hybrid of SRPG and Mosou. Koei were dissatisfied with the product, so it was shelved after a couple of years development time. After the KT merger, it was handed off to Team Ninja in the late '00s, where it was worked on for several years, but eventually scrapped due to being deemed too similar to Ninja Gaiden. Development was restarted in 2012, which produced the version we know today.

As soon as you get any armour, no enemy can one-shot you outside of the broken co-op.

If you get hit once, block immediately. It'll cancel the recovery frames. Don't try to roll out of getting combo'd, it's a death sentence.

I'm really not a graphics whore, but damn this game looks terrible.
I also thought that the level design was very poor.
It feels like one of those Playstation 2 era niche titles that only 50 people in the world have played to be honest

Also, i think that some of the mechanics in this game are a good example of kitchensink development, with the stupid Diablo lootsystem, equipment breaking after 20 minutes of gameplay, so you're expected to just pick up whatever you find and go with it

"Oh hey, every game nowadays has a leveling system, so we need that in the game, and every game nowadays also has base building so we need that as well, and how about resource management minigames? Every AAA title has this!"

Why can't game developers just stick to the core theme?

Didn't know what i was expecting considering it's Team Ninja and all, and they're notorious for making clunky shit games, but i have to wonder why they didn't cancel the game and instead developed it for 8 years. Seems nonsensical considering how how it looks and feels. Animations are also terrible to be honest. It's 2016 and they couldn't have mo-capped this?

Gameplay is faster than Soul and crazy deep. Loot will be toned down in the actual game. So many stances and combat situations and equal punishes. 60 FPS on a PS4 despite being alpha. Deep stamina system that's fair for both you and foes and reward skill. TN nailed RPG mechanics on their first RPG. There's more system and gameplay explanation than in any Soul game (provided you can even get to the message explaining them or read the menu)

Game is fantastic and much less Soul than anyone expected.

Generally you can get in 2-3 medium swings in while having enough to dodge out of harm's way. 1-2 heavy swings and then out.

If you fucking block a full string you're often setting yourself up for pain in the very near future.

NEVER SHOW THE ENEMY YOUR BACK. Every combatant in the game has a HUGE damage multiplier for hitting them in the back. Some (like the One Eyed Oni) also have another like their head or eye. If enemies are chasing you, like ninjas, and they get a combo on your back? You're dead.

Lock on to the enemy to enter strafe mode. To evade a rush, press X with no directional input to dash backward. Tapping it twice has a lowish stamina cost and get you pretty far.

If you dodge during a KI pulse (when your particles are closest to william) you'll get a special dodge with more i-frames and distance.

Late 2012, to be fair. Apparently this version that was put up on the store the other day is identical (With only slight changes to the HUD) to the one that a select few journalists were allowed to play at TGS in September last year, so it making the supposed October release date that a few retailers gave put it down for doesn't sound too crazy. Plus it's obvious from playing it that it doesn't have a massive team or budget behind it.

Like the first samurai up the hill, just in front of the mansion.

Always let them burn through their stamina and then go in with your Ki Killing string. They'll be out of breath quick and subject to the grapple move or heavy swings.

Also, deflecting is a default move for Mid Stance Katanas. Just block the moment an attack would hit to have them bounce off you, draining a ton of their stamina.

For the observant: Tailor your attacks to the stance their in (look at their weapon position). Using High Stance against someone using Low is fucking dumb, for example.

After dying so much that I've completely lost count I've basically nailed down my strategy to make the demo ezpz mode, prioritize wearing heavy armor while maintaining the weight limit below 70% over everything else. So the main stats to dump your points on is Stamina to not only boost weight limit but also an alternate way to upgrade health, secondary stats to boost is the minimum stat requirement to wear the heavy armor without penalty. After achieving below 70% load in heavy armor dump whatever stats you want because you can now take hits like a fucking boss.

Co-op goes bad in a few key areas:

#1 People running into the mansion area.
#2 People getting killed by the Ninja Oni in the burning village (when there's a way that bypasses that entirely)
#3 The motherfucking boss in the ship. They ALWAYS get one-shot by the cannonball

I consider it mission accomplished if I get them to unlock the ladder shortcut or the second or third shrine.

Best way to do damage to an oni is pop an elemental amulet and go ham with medium and light attacks to destroy their stamina. KI Pulse to prevent them from opening Yokai gates and restoring it.

A good way of getting good shit is killing Revenants that have Purple (top tier) weapons.

Here is the thing though. The developers said they wanted to make a ''hardcore'' difficult game. That doesn't translate to ''we want to sell millions'' otherwise they would make a more casual easy game like Ninja Gaiden 3 vanilla.

So if they go with this direction that means the budget of the game is not high because risk has to be low and their sales expectations are also not high.

"Infinite Stunlock" refers to what happens in co-op where you nuke an oni's stamina and don't allow them to create a gate to regain it.

For Duke Nukem Forever we know they literally completed the game twice before scrapping them. For Nioh we dont know if they went through the same process. They could have scrapped 2 prototypes instead of full games.

If you use the High stance, you can Ki pulse your regular combo into a finisher and than Ki pulse your finisher back into a regular combo to gain back 80% of your stamina. I think I got off 3 of those combos before I pop my living weapon to kill him.

Iv played and enjoyed every souls game and my first one was Daemons Souls.

I like Nioh better than DSIII.

And actually challenging.

its because he took off all his armor, which gave him a very low equip burden. If you're equipload is below 30% you can dash around as quick as hunters in bloodborne. It made the game much easier when I realized this imo.

Nioh really isn't that difficult, it's just that everybody is so used to dark souls R1 spamming that they get rekt trying that shit. Once you get the hang of it and play more strategically it's pretty simple and you can breeze through levels and bosses without getting hit.

Weapon and armour durability seems fine once you start getting whetstones, also it's important to remember that blocking lowers durability on your weapon too. Different weapons last longer too, katanas have 200, spears have 300 and axes/hammers have 400.
