Basically once you start Yukiko's dungeon proper after you get Chie. Like 3-5 hours in if I remember correctly.
The game has an insanely long prologue and it's one of the biggest reasons I'll probably never play it through more than once. That and the fusion skills being random because I don't have a vita. I wonder how many hours of my save are just me going in and out of the fusion screen to get the non-shit skills to transfer over.

It really depends on what you want to do.
If you want to start with the time management sim, then it'll take like 5 hours to properly kick in.
If you are waiting for it to get challenging then you'll have to wait the 90 hours this game lasts so you can move on to something else.

I treat them as powerups for my battle but yeah P4 is a lot more on the social side. Hell you don't even need to fight more than once every major event.
Same goes for P3 but its much more lenient because you can go at night and there's lot of free time

I didn't mind P3. Wasn't the best game ever but I liked some of the characters. I hated the characters in P4. I don't even know what it was about them, I just couldn't care less about them. The only one I sort of liked was Kanji. Teddie was an annoying piece of shit and he was another thing that really annoyed me about the game. The slinks I don't mind, I know that P3 and P4 have these as main features, but if I don't care about the characters then yeah I guess slinks are my main problem.
