The genre kinda evolved into the musou games when the transition to 3d happened and those are alive and well. You could also say the 3d spectacle fighters have its roots from the beat-em-up genre.
nah. The genre really isn't that interesting without the tits. There's still room for medieval stuff but regular, "modern" beatemups like streets of rage, double dragon, river city ransom, etc, are just irrelevant. The 90s were really their own self contained bubble and that type of backdrop isn't really put anywhere in modern media anymore so it wouldn't sell all that well.
Hell, the few times they've tried to remake/reboot series, they've flopped. double dragon neon sold like absolute shit. streets of rage remake got a C&D and had to be turned into a fan remake.
meanwhile shitty ass dynasty warriors knockoffs like shinovi versus sell like hotcakes.

The demand for the complexity of games have become too high. Nobody can appreciate the purity of a good vanilla beat em' up, without added XP systems etc.

Dungeon Fighter Online if you pick a male class. But even still there's npcs and whatnot. I forget the name but Perfect World Int. had a game too. I think it's offline now. Musou seems to be the way to go.
