I found this out by accident while exploring Irithyll Dungeon with a torch and getting smacked through the wall by that single locked-up baby Leechmonger.
Before that, I tried running into the lit sconces like with the Dirty Colossus in DeS, getting hit by the self-immolating hollows and buffing my weapon - if a torch scares the leeches off, why not a burning greatsword? I settled for backstabbing idle zombies and rolling just before the bar filled.
