Monolith Soft is the only reason I'm sticking with Nintendo. XCX even though it wasn't as good as the first one I still managed to put more hours in it than XC and every other Wii U game I have. It helps that their other projects like PxZ/2 are pretty good

Chronicles has this bravado behind it on here like it was some kind of amazing game with no flaws that revitalised the genre, and exists free of criticism.
In reality, it's a pretty okay at best jrpg with some glaring flaws, a few standout tracks in an otherwise meh soundtrack, boring one note characters, and one of "those" battle systems where it's actually a trial to push through, but whatever because it "gets good" at twenty hours or some shit. The game's pacing is all over the place, it's overlong, and the movement speed alone will drive you insane. Emulate it to at last make it nice to look at.

I only got to play the first 2 or 3 hours of this game. The last I remember iswhat's her face, Fiora? dying. Anyway, those few hours are why I bought XCX.
I assume this game has a stronger narrative so that's one issue I have with XCX taken care of, but does this game at least tell you where the quests (affinity missions or equivalent) and monsters you need to continue the story are? Do affinity missions ever block the story up? I hated when XCX stopped the story to make you have lunch with a side character the game practically forces you not to use, and on top of that doesn't tell you where this mission is unless you scour the city map checking every hexagon.
X is a better game in that just running around and exploring is more fun than it ever was in Chronicles, but it's story never really goes very far beyond a decent premise and setting. I personally prefer X and enjoyed it the more I avoided rushing the story but it's very easy to see why people would prefer Chronicles

No.
Affinity doesn't matter in Chronicles, although you'll often find yourself involved in a forced affinity quest before you can continue with the story when you meet each character. It's one of the things X does better, putting most of the side characters stories on side quests. In chronicles you'll have to do a character arc for Fiora, Melia and Riki before you can carry on with the story.
