Why do people say Final Fantasy XIII sucked?
>>
>>335815856
Because it sucked.
Unless you're talking about Lost Odyssey , in which case I honestly can't remember anyone actively bashing it remotely on the scale of XIII
>>
People didnt like it because lightning was pretty

People liked lost oddessy because the main character was ugly and relatable
>>
>>335816015
Lost Odyssey story was boring and generic but it manages to get a great ending
>>
>>335815856
I wish lost odyssey was on something other than Xbox 360. Wanna play that amazing game again.

>>
>>335816015
>People didnt like it because lightning was pretty
No, they didn't like it because it was a fucking hallway simiulator with terrible characters, a boring story. A boring story that fails to explain itself and you have to use the fucking codex to explain.
>>
>>335815856
Because it did and so did Lost Odyssey.
>>
>that difference in writing quality between the dreams and the rest of the game
>>
>>335816015
>the main character was ugly
He's sexy as hell tho.
>>
>>335816204
This is why we need PC gaming to gain traction. Not for the "m-muh exclusives" faggotry, but for our posterity. Nothing beats a PC for permanent libraries.
>>
>>335816430
This OP. I referred to the codex every time itwas bbecause there was vital plot points only found there.

Also, the gameplay isn't that great if you aren't intoxicated. Which also helped with the story.

Short answer, the linear nature of the game, especially in the first ten chapters on Cocoon
>>
>>335816737
Tbh Lightning looks different in that scene than she does in the rest of the game. IIRC, it was pre-rendered abdomen used in an early teaser trailer
>>

Why would you want a dude in a dress over a goddess in warrior garbs?
>>
>>335816015
Lighting's anorexic appearance wasn't what made the game terrible. It was Square backing out of fleshing out the world, providing a poor narrative coupled with an unlikable main character and zero motherfucking exploration. I don't want to have the universe opened through future installments, either. They had their chance and they threw timey-wimey and paradoxical reality-warping horse shit into the mix which made for a forced story with poor resolution and an underwhelming and unsatisfying character arc that just would not fuck off.

I'm all for characters have their Good End but the amount of pandering Lighting received was mind numbingly atrocious. And didn't the trilogy sell like hot cakes? Fuck, man. Fuck. At least there was a black dude. Always nice to see racial diversity coming from nippon seeing that they have absolutely zero reason to do it.

The story telling was really bad. Had to use the codex for important points.
The characters are not interesting. The only redeemable character was Sazh.
The combat was pretty lack luster. It was just scan if its a new enemy, then triple ravager into triple commando for most of it, switching sentinel if you really needed to block something. Throw in the buff/debuff class' if you wanted to 5 star things.
Then the exploration which is the biggest gripe. They but all this effort into the back ground and visuals but then they railroad you into hall ways, but why? They dont even try to give you the illusion of exploring just go from point A to B

I know you're being stupid on purpose probably but I'm pretty sure his point was that pc games are always available since they can just be patched to modern hardware rather than being stuck on dead consoles.
>>
>>335817805
>Not cracking and emulating fucking everything.

Yes. I know denuvo is coming. Yes. I know always online is a cancer. They're plagues that affect consoles too. Not to mention consoles are pretty much all for abandoning old software now. Far more profit in repackaging and reselling ad nauseum. At the end of the day this sentence remains true no matter how much you bite or hiss or scratch at Anons in the internet.

>>335816652
>Nothing beats a PC for permanent libraries

Your kiddie is showing, OP.
People say FFXIII sucked because it was a hot mess of a Final Fantasy.
No exploration, linear maps, watered down story and battle system.
>>
>>335818132
>Not to mention consoles are pretty much all for abandoning old software now.
I can buy any game released physically and shove it into my disc drive. How is that "abandoning" anything? What's actually getting abandoned is digital games when the fags remove the rights to sell them. Try buying Marvel vs Capcom 2 or 3 on PSN/XBL.

Because it really is "Final Hallway". I've just replayed FFIX and FFX and then finished XIII for the first time recently, and it's stunning how terrible everything about XIII is in comparison. X was the start of the Hallway shit but XIII is awful. The gameplay is boring and you can basically just press one button for most of the game. The characters are bland, particularly Lightning who has zero personality, and the story is so tedious I found myself actually wanting to skip cutscenes to get back to grinding with the equally boring gameplay.

On the other hand, LO is great and now I think I'm gonna break it out and start a playthrough today so, thanks OP.

>>335816015
I want Kaim's immortal D. Lightning a shit. I wouldn't even invite her to watch me blow him.

I'm super glad you have room in your living room for a PS2, PS3, PS4, an old model Wii, Wii U, 360, and Bone so you can play all of your discs in an ultra convenient one stop shop but I'm going to stick to my PC doing all of that and more since I lack the space. To each their own?
>>
>>335818735
I'm so happy you have space to keep MS DOS, Apple PowerPCs, a windows 95, 98, XP, 7 and windows 10 machines in your living room. To each their own I guess.
>>
>>335818735
What gave you that impression and why be smug about emulation? I played, or am still playing more accurately, FFIX on PC anyway.

The only consoles I have out are my 360, PS4, PS3, and PS2. Wii is packed away since I haven't used it in forever. It's nice to be able to play some games on console. Sure I could emulate it, but why when I own the console and the disks?
>>
>>335818514
>and the story is so tedious I found myself actually wanting to skip cutscenes to get back to grinding with the equally boring gameplay.

This can't be stressed enough. The hallway has two features: shitty grindan combat and cutscenes. Both are so fucking terrible that while experiencing one, you long for the other. The entire game is feeling trapped and waiting for a release that never comes.
>>
Why has no game (or RPG) come close to Lost Odyssey in terms of facial animations and voice work yet? Every emotion is properly expressed both on their face and through their voice, it's amazing (most likely because it was based off of the English dub so that's the original version for all intents and purposes). That game was a fucking masterpiece, I tell you what.
>that scene where his daughter dies
That hit me more than I thought it would. Fuck me it's pretty harrowing actually.
>>
>>335816586
That's what happens when you get one of Japan's best novelists, translated by a respected academic, and then write the rest of it with a bunch of Japanese game writers.
>>
H-Have people forgot that VII and X were also hallways?
>>
>>335820553
Apparently the translator didn't want to translate it initially because of how violent they were but he did it once he saw that wasn't the point of them.

But fuck me, they were brilliant.
>>
>>335820657
Nah man I hated X too (though I LOVED Blitzball for some reason. Spent hours doing that). I think it was because my first FF game was XII and I thought it was so fantastic and to just go back to that was a bit of a step back for me. I also played X-2 first and that is a lot better gameplay wise and freedom wise though FUCK the 100%.
>>
Ironically, people really shit on LO when it came out for having such an old school combat system.

These days, people are fucking begging for those systems to return.

IT'S LINEAR AND LINEAR THINGS ARE LIKE YUCK, HAVEN'T YOU SEEN HOW MUCH BETTER OPEN WORLD GAME ARE? GOOD THING THEY ARE MAKING FF15 AN OPEN WORLD GAME, THOSE ARE GOOD, JUST LIKE XENOBLADE AND FF12
>>
>>335816015
Just to throw this in.

You think the handsome, literal immortal with the banging wife is relatable?
>>
>>335816817
So people don't bitch about X and it's linear Nature up until you get the airship?

Double standards much?
>>
>>335820657
It's not so much the linearity that's the issue but what's done with it. VII and X still have side activities. Little things to distract and entertain aside from the core.

XIII is literally nothing but grinding the hall to the next cutscene.

The old man tells Kaim (or whatever his name is) to close his eyes, as well as the rest of the soldiers.

They all ignore the old man but Kaim and then never see the light of day when they are rescued since it burns out their retinas or whatever.

>>
>>335815856
Because it sucked.
>>
>>335822812
Which is precisely why he ended up translating it you fucking retard. The translator just hated video game's violence for the sake of violence but once he sat down and had a look he realised it just wasn't the case with this.
>>
"The game plays itself, John... the game plays itfself John... THE GAME PLAYS ITSELF JAHN"
>>
>>335822812

I said gratuitous violence. Not what the dreams were which the translator realized.

Take the latest DOOM for a while. It's all fictional, blood and gore, etc. But done for entertainment which is just rather odd for me.

I'm a paramedic and 7 months ago responded to a car crash. The husband and wife were mangled, and the wife before dying on scene was crying wondering where her child was. It was thrown into the glove compartment and absolutely mangled. I had to leave work for a long time after seeing it and ever since I can't stand over the top violence in media anymore when you can see how horrifying it really is.

I like how sections of Spec Ops: The Line does it for example just because it shows it as horrifying. I don't like it in games like DOOM because it's done for "wow epic entertainment.
>>
>>335822396
Anon, when you're one of the few people trusted to translate Murakami, you get to be a bit picky with what you work on.
>>
>>335822935
And he was stupid for making the assumption in the first place.

Also literally the best games have violence for the sake of violence.
>>
>>335823171
Honestly if you don't like doom you shouldn't be playing video games. The best of the medium are JUST entertainment.

Also I didn't read your blog post past "I'm a paramedic". Talk to any inner city cop or literally any paramedic enough and you hear it all eventually, which I have.

Why do people say Lost Odyssey was good. It's pacing was complete shit and battles take way longer than the average turn based RPGs thanks to long (and boring) animations with that lame ring input, multiple turn casting and that crappy wall system. Didn't help that the best bits of story were self contained in text based dreams.

It wasn't worth the time I put in.
