I'm an artist and I would like an answer. I used to love drawing inspiration from Final Fantasy designs. Not anymore. It's gone. There's no more creativity there or beauty. Just usual drab boring shit.
Don't get me wrong I like realistic designs but they're not even realistic. They're just boring. What happened? Can someone tell me? I can post some of my drawings and you can clearly see FF inspiration for sure.

We hate mobile games in the west but turn-based RPGs and a lot of the talent we recognize as being tied with the genre are now on mobile. Japan sees it differently.

I would agree. The designs regarding FFXIII is shit. The fantastical designs seem to be designed to rekindle the magic of ff but I feel like they're just not scratching that itch I've been having for a while. FFXIV is a perfect example of older looking designs but I feel like it's lacking creatively.
Regarding this picture the multilayer armor design is the most uncreative backwash ever and is done to just fill in gaps where hurr I don't know what to put there.
