Cloud's entire persona in FFVII was "Cloud, SOLDIER 1st Class"; a combination of his own abrasive, jerkass personality (don't forget he was extremely confrontational as a kid after he got blamed for Tifa), his memories of Nibelheim and Tifa, and her expectations of him, his interpretation of what a SOLDIER 1st class would act like along his own mental gymnastics to convince himself that he was in SOLDIER to begin with, his own natural talent at swordsmanship (this came from the Compilation, however, so take as you will) and Zack's body language (which was coached directly to him by Zack himself to help him "be cooler") The only time where he used Zack's identity was during the nibelheim incident, which was part of his aformentioned mental gymnastics.
Cloud never acted beta. He's 100% correct, though. Zack filled Cloud in on what happened in the reactor after the fact in the days following the inspection when Sephiroth was holed up in the Nibelheim basement. Cloud used that information when he self-inserted into Zack's shoes during the Nibelheim incident.
In addition, Cloud saw what happened in the basement when Sephiroth left to go retrieve Jenova, hence why he left to try and warn his mom and the townspeople, but was knocked unconscious outside his house when Sephiroth went on his rampage.

I think Crisis Core did too much damage to the story of 7, honestly. Sure the concept was nice and fit with the idea of "memories can continue to inspire long after people die" but the idea of people running around with fucking angel wings and shit is just way too stupid to let slide. Especially all the gay yaoi-bait bullshit spawned every time Genesis is on screen for even a second.

3rd Classers are all basically green. Sure, they're ultra strong, but still vulnerable to bullets.
Don't forget that Cloud is essentially as strong as Sephiroth is (physically, thanks to being a Sephiroth clone) and is a naturally talented swordsman that even makes Zack look unimpressive.
Cloud loves whoever the player loves because the player IS Cloud.
