How would you go about saving the PSO franchise?

Release a new game.
Make it available everywhere (not just Japan-only).
Include the good points from the previous games.
Put it on PC along with consoles.
Not make it a cash shop like PSO2 turned out to be.

I think the best way to save PSO is to ACTUALLY RELEASE THE DAMN GAME OUTSIDE JAPAN for a change of pace.

Just FYI PSO2's cash shop isn't that bad, it's mostly just dressup stuff. I've gotten a good number of really rare items just from playing and I've never used the cash shop once.

Good to hear. I mostly hear complaints about PSO2 due to the cash shop, but that's mostly from /v/, so I'm not surprised it's simply blown out of proportion.

I do remember that the original PSO had some good points (the story, especially following RRR's journal logs) and both the combat and customization in PSU was better. I assume that the combat from the PSP games was improved from that, another I haven't played those yet. PSZ had some nice changes, including "charging" powers and weapon techs for improved versions, which was quite a nice way to give more attack options with less buttons.

Surely all the good ideas could come together for a really good game.

Sequel to Blue Burst with modern grafix, give classes balance, give it phantasy star infinitys combat system, release it in the fucking west for pete sake, add in more classes and weapons, slap it on steam or at least advertise it shitload.

The worst part of the cash shop is Premium, which locks you out of having a player shop, decorating your room, and trading directly with other players, but you can access the previous two for free through various means. Otherwise it's almost entirely cosmetic shit, which you can buy from other players for in-game currency anyway.

They made a specific decision to go from grittier to bloomier.

Even compare the Dark Falz-type enemies. In PSO they were very alien looking, unsettlingly foreign and this even extended to A.Beasts. In PSO2, the Dark Falz enemies look like things ripped straight from Bayonetta.

The locations and special weapons in 2 also suck dick compared to 1 despite those probably being the hardest thing to fuck up in a sequel that is quiet literally always being updated.

Disregarding all the retarded aesthetic choices that went into making PSO2 - The combat design is superior to PSO and PSU in every respect.

PSO's melee was grindy as fuck. Unique animations granted to certain gender/class was retarded. Photon Arts for both melee and ranged was a great choice. Even the magic was improved.

If they could just refine the visuals but keep their combat, maybe incorporate the mecha they've brought in as its own unique class, PSO3 could be GOTY. Which we in the West would never get to play anyway.

No it doesn't. Pso1's mix of lights and heavies made you think about speed and accuracy. Every enemy had different amounts of hitstun and you could vary how fast you attacked to not be hit back. In two, you literally just spam your 3 photon arts while using your invincible dash to avoid damage. It gets boring even faster than pso1 did.

I've not played PSO2, so I can't comment.

PSU and PSZ had the same strategic placement. I'd argue that PSU was actually a bit better, since the weapons had more variety and gave you more options. I actually ran through the story primarily with a spear, which let me lance through enemies and made fighting in doorways quite good. It also meant I could place some distance between myself and an enemy, even with a combo. By comparison, the greatswords/polearms in PSO were basically the same thing but with different stats, and all the other melee weapons were just sabers except the daggers.

PSZ had that dodge roll, which kind of killed the strategy element. But it did have a nice selection of weapons as well.

Psu had a much more expansive storyline, you're right. But weapons were more varied than you might think. You had dual swords which took a while for the first strike, but then hit 4 more times for damage, slicers, that cut enemies apart at range. Pso1 was more about rapidly switching weapons on the fly, at one point I remember carrying at least 8.

PSO dual swords were very similar to daggers, from what I remember, at least with the pacing in attacking with them. All the guns (outside the miniguns) pretty much acted the same, as well. I did forget about the PSO slicers, but they had incredibly poor accuracy to the point where I basically ignored them.

Still, that's... four weapon types for melee, and two for guns. One of which (miniguns) I don't think anyone ever used. I seem to recall switching between rifle/handgun for Rangers and perhaps a saber/staff for Forces, but I guess I just never bothered with switching weapons all that much. Maybe the greatsword and a saber for a Hunter, along with a handgun for traps. (I generally used HUcast with my rare Hunter.)

Cash shop literally just luxury of getting good spots for 12man-raid, a little money boost if you can get lucky, but never count on it.

If you want get good gears, almost everything is behind grinding or praying to get a good drop - although there are different ways like using in-game currency to get "rare enemy triggers" almost no cash involved.

And if you have 36 dollars to spend, its enough for 3 month luxury ingame, and most people don't really need do this.
